Route 66 State Park, one of the newest additions to the Missouri State Park System, is now a reality.
The new park, officially opened on September 11, 1999, fills a need in Missouri by offering a stopping point of recognized value to all Route 66 travelers, while also serving as a powerful magnet for local visitation and use.
This includes boater access to the Meramec River which flows through the park, picnic sites for individuals and groups, a special event area for activities such as festivals, car displays and the “75th anniversary of 66” party in November 2001, and more than 13 miles of trails for hikers, bicyclists and equestrians.

A new U.S. Route 66 in Missouri would sew together new, proposed Route 66 Scenic byway sections providing the Route 66 traveler with a continuous, seamless Route 66 connecting with a new U.S. Route 66 in Illinois and a new U.S. Route 66 in Kansas.
The State of Missouri has done what can be considered a very good job of installing commemorative Route 66 historic signs along the old highway.
Unfortunately, designations other that the "66" moniker are assigned to these roads with only a few miles near the Kansas border being the only exception and even that short stretch is posted as Missouri State Highway 66.

There are small stretches of drivable Route 66 here and there and a good guide or map is essential for your explorations.
Route 66 winds its way out of Pacific and passes many relics from the hey-day of the Mother Road.
Once it was the place to stop on Route 66 and was billed as the "World’s Largest Roadside Restaurant." The Diamonds was originally built in 1927 then again in 1948 after a fire destroyed the original building.

These signs were formerly located on Route 66 near Lambert International Airport in the St. Louis area and the buildings they were associated with were destroyed for airport expansion.
Route 66 State Park in Eureka, Missouri is a possible future location.
Shortly after the International Route 66 Festival of 2004, the sign was dismantled and put in storage due to the planned demolition of the building that supported it.

I'm attempting to preserve the state's signs along U.S. The folks I am working with are affiliated with Friends of the Mother Road, Inc., and the Route 66 Association of Missouri.
The state's department of transportation is improving that section of road and wants the sign to be removed.
That is what we all have to do to preserve what is left along Route 66 (as well as any other blue highway that you may hold near and dear to your heart).

So one of my new favorite epic rides to do, is to park at either Castlewood or Chubb (lone elk side) then ride to the other via route 66 state park-old rail bed-al foster trail, ride the other trail, then come back.
Crossing the meramec river is done via bridge at the entrance to route 66 state park.
it doesn't really seem like it, but castlewood proper and route 66 are actually on the same side of the river, due to the way the river curves.

A group of Route 66ers from Indiana cut off from the main pack of cars and we did our own cruising on 66.
