  CT 8 Expressway
A NEW EXPRESSWAY FOR THE ROUTE 8 CORRIDOR:
As for the old Route 8's path through the Naugatuck State Forest, I seem to remember that the northbound and southbound roadways were separated; the southbound roadway is the current alignment along the river, while the northbound roadway was to the east of the present roadway and a lot higher on the bank.
A drive down the 58-mile-long CT 8 Expressway provides a diverse vista of Connecticut, from the historic industrial towns of Bridgeport and Waterbury, to the modern, sprawling suburbs of eastern Fairfield County, and from the natural beauty of the Naugatuck River valley, to the forests of northwest Litchfield County.

Pittsburgh Highways:  Route 30 Relocation (Cancelled)
The expressway was proposed to relieve the current US 30 alignment of congestion.
A second section of the Route 30 Relocation would have begun on the eastern side of the Greensburg Bypass at the Mount Pleasant/Greensburg interchange and continue east to Latrobe.
The right-of-way would have been upgraded to an expressway from that point to Ligonier, with an interchange built at PA 259.

 Building the Missing Link
The 15 mile (still unbuilt) section of the Route 7 Expressway between Grist Mill Road in Norwalk and Sugar Hollow Road in Danbury continues to be a battleground between proponents and opponents of constructing the highway almost 50 years after the highway was proposed.
Expressways were proposed for Routes 25 and 34, but the same opposition that places the Route 7 expressway in jeopardy, effectively killed those expressways in the early 1990s.
Out of the three routes that were proposed in the 1950s, the Route 7 expressway is still a viable option, and the increasing severity of congestion and accidents along Routes 7, 25, and 34 warrant the expressway's construction as soon as possible.

 Connecticut Routes 8, 8A
Route 8 is one of the original New England Interstates, early 1920s 2-lane roads that crisscrossed New England and kept consistent numbering.
As plans developed to upgrade Route 8 to a freeway, its south end was relocated to downtown Bridgeport; this was done on Sept. 27, 1951, with Routes 110 and 113 moving close to where they are now, and Route 65 being retired.
This four-lane road was widened in 1942, and was the last section of Route 8 to be upgraded to a freeway, decades later.

The expressway was to provide an alternative to the two-lane US 6, which offered limited visibility through hilly terrain, through Plymouth west to the CT 8 Expressway.

The failure of the State DOT to complete Route 7 is a perfect example of the corrupt bureaucratic structure in the State of Connecticut.
Politicians in the Route 7 corridor are likely getting thousands (if not millions) of dollars slipped into their wallets by opponents and environmental groups who oppose the highway's construction.
Routes 25 and 34 fell victims to the lies and propaganda of opponents who believe the life of a tree is more important than a human life.

The original Connecticut Route 8 was constructed during the early 1920s, from the present-day intersection of US-1 and CT-110 in Stratford to the Massachusetts State Line.
The routing of Route 8 between Stratford and Ansonia has changed several times between 1948 and 1962, when the first segment of highway between Shelton and Seymour was constructed.
Nonetheless, the Connecticut DOT has spent the last several years on improving the expressway’s substandard sections: the Route 8 mainline was reconstructed between Exits 14 and 16 from 1986 to 1998, including widening of the Commodore Hull Bridge and replacement of the bridge over Route 34 at Exit 15.

BLUE ROUTE: The third route was a central alignment that paralleled the PA 320 corridor.
The proposed route, which was to be six lanes along its entire length, differed from the current configuration in that it was to feature cloverleaf interchanges at US 1 (Media Bypass), PA 3 (Baltimore Pike) and US 30 (Lancaster Avenue), and a partial diamond interchange at PA 320 (Sproul Road).
The northernmost section of the "Blue Route" was completed in December 1992, one year after an important 16.5-mile-long section from I-76 south to I-95 opened to traffic, and 13 years after the initial section north of I-76 opened to traffic.
