Rover had been toying with the idea of base unit construction shortly after the start of the P4 production run, when it was realised just how much weight that solid steel chassis would add to the car, and years before Citroens DS 19 was launched in 1955.
Rover owned hundreds of acres of land adjacent to the existing Solihull factory, but their requests for planning approval to build factory extensions were being continually disallowed by the government.
P5 was designed around a monocoque pressed steel body shell, but was extremely strong due to the addition of a box section chassis sub-frame running from the front of the car back to the front seat area.

Current Rovers are indisputably good cars, yet the new design secures not only a considerable improvement in performance but at the same time a reduction in fuel consumption, which is a remarkable double achievement in engineering, and is the result of an entirely new form of cylinder head and valve arrangement.
First, on the physical side, the Rover P3 head places the sparking plug in the centre of the flat side of a hemisphere, so that the lenght of flame travel is equal in all directions, and at a minimum.
Another excellent Rover feature is that the sliding telscopic joint for the propeller shaft is not exposed but is contained within a tail extension of the gear box, where it is automatically lubricated and protected from road grit.

 The greatest: Rover P5/P5B
Rover had become rich and confident thanks to the launch of the Land Rover in 1948, and it seemed that what was seen as the company's previous stuffiness (but was actually having an eye for building cars for a grown up clientele) would be lost for good.
Although it is hard to believe now, the P5 was something of a departure from the Rovers that preceded it, and it could be said that it was this, and not the P6 that marked the point in time when Rover began to shake off its "Auntie" image once and for all.
MG Rover launched the 75 V8 in 2004, and ensured that the world knew that it was paying homage to the P5 with its full-depth grille design.

Rover P5 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Rover P5 series (commonly called 3-Litre and 3½ Litre for the engine displacement) was a group of large (in European terms) saloon and coupe automobiles produced from 1958 through 1973.
The Mark II version of the P5 was introduced in 1962.
When Margaret Thatcher entered Downing Street in 1979 after her election victory, she was driven in a 1972 model- and it was during Thatcher's eleven year tenure that the P5 was eventually phased out as a Prime-Ministerial car, in favour of the Jaguar XJ- a 2001 model of which is used to transport Tony Blair.

 Engines: Rover V8
For several years, Spen King and Gordon Bashford had been investigating alternative power units to power their top of the range cars; the 3-litre straight-six engine found in the P5 was by this time well past its sell-by date, being heavy, not particularly refined and uneconomical.
It was Rover's Managing Director, William Martin-Hurst, who managed to source the 3.5-litre V8 engine, having cast far and wide for something suitable - and finding it by accident in an American boatyard.
The Range Rover continued to use the V8 engine throughout its life, yet this never really proved to be a barrier to sales, even during the second fuel crisis of 1979 and the ensuing world recession.

The famous P5 model of 1956 was a revolutionary step for Rover in construction and style, just one part of the story in this history of a classic post-war British car.
Taylor covers the background to the P5 decision, engineering and engine development, MkI to MkIII 3-litre cars, the V8 engine and 3.5-litre cars, competition and rally history, as well as offering expert advice on buying and running a P5 today.
Built from 1958 to 1973, the P 5 and P 5 B were the last Rovers to compete with the likes of Jaguar and other top British manufacturers. For this reason,a history of these cars is long overdue, and James Taylor could not have taken more trouble with his research.
