Rover was at that time experimeting with new 5 and 6 cylinder engines and altought the experiments proved succesfull the engines never used in production cars.
A number of modifications were done to the V8 engine, the Buick Rochester carburetors were replaced by the SU ones, and the Lucas ignition replaced that by AC-Delco.
The SD1 engine kept the 88.9 mm bore and 71.1 mm stroke and the capacity of 3.528 cc.

The aluminium engine was very expensive to produce, however, and it suffered considerable problems with oil and coolant sealing, as well as with radiator clogging from use of antifreeze incompatible with aluminium.
Rover's plans to use its then fairly new 2.2 L four-cylinder engine was soon abandoned because BL management ruled that substantially redesigned versions of Triumph's six-cylinder engine were to power the car instead.

The Rover V8 engine is a compact V8 internal combustion engine with aluminum cylinder heads and cylinder block, originally designed by General Motors and later produced by Rover in the United Kingdom.
The compact engine was extremely lightweight, at just 144 kg (318 lb), and capable of high power outputs: the strongest Buick version of this engine rated 200 hp (149.2 kW), and the very similar Oldsmobile "Jetfire" turbocharged version made 215 hp (160.4 kW) (both numbers SAE gross).
The aluminum engine was very expensive to produce, however, and it suffered considerable problems with oil and coolant sealing, as well as with radiator clogging from use of antifreeze incompatible with aluminum.

The GM V8 engine kit consists of an adaptor plate that bolts to the rear of the engine.
This allows the Rover flex plate and torque converter to be bolted to the rear of the crankshaft adaptor as with the old Rover V8 engine.
Chevy V8 engines were released with two flywheel and flex plate sizes; they where fitted with a 153 tooth ring gear or 168 tooth ring gear, as a result two starter motor offsets are available.

It was Rover's Managing Director, William Martin-Hurst, who managed to source the 3.5-litre V8 engine, having cast far and wide for something suitable - and finding it by accident in an American boatyard.
Like the P5B, the V8 engine was the making of the Range Rover; somehow it seems hard to imagine that car enjoying quite the success that it did without the smooth and powerful V8 engine under the bonnet.
The Range Rover continued to use the V8 engine throughout its life, yet this never really proved to be a barrier to sales, even during the second fuel crisis of 1979 and the ensuing world recession.

 V8 Conversions
The B.L. MGB GT V8 utilised a modified 4 synchro overdrive box that is identical to the 4 synchro 1800 B unit except for the ratios and the bell housing, which mates direct to the Rover block.
The engine in these early conversions was quite high in the engine bay because of the proximity of the engine to the crossmember and steering.
Because of the extra length of the V8 engine, the original radiator mountings have to be removed and the later radiator mounting plates welded in place, as shown in the illustration.

 How to fit a Rover V8 Engine into a Ford Sierra Car
Next I tried a Burton Engineering 2.1 litre pinto, with lightened flywheel, daft compression, huge valve Burton head, 285 cam, etc etc (the usual "conventional" tuning stuff) this was fun, but had lumpy tick over like a bike engine, and was a flat as a fart at low RPM.
So then I looked at a shiny rover V8 P6 factory blueprinted "test" motor that was used by Champion Plugs for some spark plug development work for the Rover factory many years ago and it had never been in a car.
New engine mounts were fabricated and welded to the chassis rails under the bonnet.

The Rover V8 was originally a (fro US standards) very advanced Chrysler unit, small block, all-alloy etc. Chrysler chose not to pursue it, and the engine was considered as a powersource for boats.
Rover was looking for a replacement for its in-line sixes, and this fitted the bill (and, more importantly, they fitted their cars) perfectly.
Re: the Rover V8 I came across this info a while ago I just couldn't remember the specifics, thanks which also reminds me of a totally unrelated engine the Volvo B series which also started life as a marine engine, I've nothing remarkable to add about it just that it has legendary durablity.

This made the engine roughly as powerful as the Cosworth DFV but proved to be too much for the stock block that broke in many occasions.Rover were in need of a new, more powerful engine in the mid 1960s, and became aware of this small, lightweight V8.
Originally planned as a 180 cu in engine 2.9 litres with room for expansion, it wasn't long before the decision was made to go for a larger capacity for production models, bringing it up to 215 cu in 3.5 litre.
Rover 3.5 gets more webbing and more metal around cylinder liners in 1983 - result is known as the "stiff block".

Less powerful than the engines in either the Porsche or the VW, and not quite as smooth as the V8 in the Lexus, the Range Rover's 282-horsepower V8 is enough to satisfy all but the most discerning drivers.
It may not have the biggest engine or the nicest leather or the most room in back, but as a daily driver it's hard to argue with the refined manner in which the Range Rover goes about its business.
The Rover was also fun and easy to drive off-road, though on the moderately difficult trails we encountered, I didn't find that it had any real advantage over the GX 470.

Talking of turbine engine installations, many moons ago a Dart was being installed in a P51 Mustang in Canberra but I heard the aircraft never flew, the Dart was removed and the original engine re installed.
Rover used the basic block for years, but its finest moment was when Sir Jack Brabham persuaded Repco (Oz car parts mfrg) to turn it into a 3L F1 engine.
The engine in the Buick was all aluminium alloy and as was pointed out the problems were with corrosion (don't think the Yank mechanics were too up on how to deal with the cooling needs either), wear and overheating.

TR Register Member: No Light and torquey the Rover V8 is, and my concern is that it is so different than the original TR engine that it would be difficult to get the balance and gearing of a TR6 right with one in.
Any Rover V8 is noticeably more powerful than any standard 6 cylinder (bearing in mind that '150 bhp' is, in reality, nearer 130) and with considerably greater torque.
I think sticking the Rover V8 in a TR6 is the work of a philistine, the only advantage I can think of is it sounds great, the two obvious candidates for it are the TR7 and the MGB which at least had some history of using that engine.

An engine stand is a must, as will be the hoist to get it off the stand.
The four double-headed coil set-up from the late Range Rover is very neat and is driven by a 36 minus 1 pickup machined and fitted into the SD1 flywheel.

Engineer two adaptor plates so that the mazda CV joints connect to the sierra diff outputs.
Engine temp sensor – drill and tap a hole for it at the back of the manifold near its rearmost bolt on the drivers side.
I tried to engineer a “shunt regulator” system retaining the original fuel pump but this resulted in dreadful flooding and was ditched in favour or an external electric fuel pump with the original “retired” and a series pressure regulator under the bonnet.

The bulk of the V8 engine in terms of extra width is highlighted by the need to remove a section of each bulkhead corner to allow clearance for the rear of the V8’s cylinder heads.
The Rover V8 as we know it first appeared in 1967 in the Rover P5B (The 3 litre body with the B a reference to Buick) and was apparently very similar to the previous Buick versions.

The Rover V8 is in quite a nice spec - it's a 3.9 built by RPI.
The missing got progressively worse, and the engine was definitely a few cylinders short by the time I got back to the workshop.
He suggested that there ought to be more engine earths on the car - specifically one from the starter, one from the alternator and one from the engine to the bulkhead.

This is usually achieved by using different stroke cranks in conjunction with the '3.5 litre' bore of 88.9mm diameter or the '3.9 litre' bore of 93.5mm (early) or 94mm (later).
All the dimensions quoted here are in metric for the sake of consistency, but the engine was originally all imperial (it started life with a 3.5" bore and 2.8" stroke hence some of the funny metric sizes).
It is used by all serious engineers to compare the efficiency of engines since it does not depend on capacity or rpm.
