Border Reivers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The Reivers came from families who "rode with the moonlight" with their "lang spears" and their "steill bonnets." There are 77 predominant family names who can claim to have been Reivers.
Reivers had endured such purges in the past but this time the border headmen joined in the proceedings against their own kinsmen.
Although the Reiver's conduct may seem deplorable and most of it probably was, his spirit nevertheless remains undaunted and we look back in the mists of time and remember the reiver as a brave, forceful, fighting man, somewhat romantic in the passage of time, and always ready to ride in the moonlight.

wiki/Border Reivers Definition / wiki/Border Reivers Research   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The true reivers didn't care which side of the border they raided, so long as the people they hit had no powerful protectors and no connection to their own kin.
Many reivers collected tribute from more peaceful folk to spare them from attack; this was called "flmail" or "fl rent," and this is where the term "flmail" entered the English language.
Long after they were gone, the reivers were romanticized by writers such as Sir Walter Scott, although he got some things wrong---the term "moss-trooper" more correctly refers to one of the robbers that existed after the real reivers had been put down.

Roxburgh was constituted a shire by David I, and its ancient town of Roxburgh formed one of the Court of Four Burghs.
The original District of Roxburgh was relatively small (less than 50 miles East to West and even less North to South) and was squeezed between the English counties of Northumberland and Cumberland and the Scottish counties of Dumfries, Selkirk and Berwick with a small corridor reaching through to Mid Lothian.
It was at one time taken by the English and remained in their possession for 100 years until it was finally recapturd in 1460 by which time town and castle had been reduced to rubble and was no longer worth fighting over.

The Reiver’s horse was also the result of warring evolution; when the Romans arrived they brought with them Frisian horses from Europe, which then evolved over the next millenium into a shaggy, but sturdy pony called variously a "hobbler", "bog trotter" and "nagg".
Legend has it that Reiver children were baptised with their fighting hand covered, so that it was unchristened to allow it to be used in unholy fashion conducting feuds against his enemies.
In reprisal for a particularly effective Scottish Reivers raid, Robert Bowes, the English Deputy East March Warden raided and devastated Teviotdale and the surrounding area; whilst returning with the plunder and livestock, the English were ambushed by the Earl of Huntly at Haddon Rig.

Hawick Reiver’s Festival, Hawick, Scottish Borders, Annual Events, Border Events
It can be too easy to romanticise the reivers’ exploits and the violence they enacted with arms and with arson.
But fire and steel were not only basic elements of the reivers’ way of life, they also defined the spirit of the people that lived it: a fiery pride and passion and a steel-like courage and determination in their actions.
Hawick lies at the heart of reiver country, in what was known as the Scottish Middle March, and this festival not only brings to life some of the region’s turbulent history but also evokes the spirit of the reivers and celebrates its legacy in our culture and traditions.
