Roxy Music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Roxy Music is a British art rock group founded in the early 1970s as a collaborative project between art school graduates Bryan Ferry (vocals, keyboards) and Brian Eno (electronic music specialist).
Roxy Music was a significant influence on the early British punk movement, as well as providing a model for many "New Wave" acts and the subsequent New Romantic and experimental electronic groups of the early 1980s.
Roxy Music also returned to the stage (still without Eno) for a live performance at this year's Isle of Wight Festival on Saturday 11 June 2005, their first UK concert since the 2001 world tour.

Roxy Music reunited in 1978 to record a new album, Manifesto (A public declaration of intentions (as issued by a political party or government)), but with a reshuffled line-up.
The changed line-up was reflected in a distinct change in Roxy's music, with the jagged and unpredictable elements of the groups sound giving way to smooth, brooding musical arrangements, culminating in the sombre perfectionism and beautifully sculpted soundscapes of their eighth and final album Avalon (additional info and facts about Avalon) in 1982.
Roxy Music has also announced that they will return to the stage (still without Eno) for a live performance at this year's Isle of Wight Festival on Saturday 11 June, 2005, their first UK concert since the 2001 world tour.

Roxy Music never replaced him permanently; instead, they hired new bassists for each record and tour, beginning with Rik Kenton, who appeared on their eponymous debut for Island Records.
Both Roxy Music and the group's second album, 1973's For Your Pleasure, which was recorded with bassist John Porter, were greeted with enthusiasm in the U.K., but virtually ignored in the U.S. Frustrated with Ferry's refusal to record his compositions, Eno left the band after the completion of For Your Pleasure.
Roxy Music's comeback effort, Manifesto, was released in the spring of 1979, and it boasted a sleek, disco-influenced soul-pop sound that was markedly different from and more accessible than their earlier records.

 Roxy Music
The first two Roxy Music albums are usually known as the first representatives of the 'electronic revolution' - records that preceded their time by a good eight or ten years, and, in fact, predict everything that was good and everything that was bad about the electronic aspects of New Wave.
Roxy Music announce their arrival on the scene with a little home-brewed tempest - the furious 'Re-make/Re-model', a fast, rebellious rocker that sounds heavy without actually being heavy, and it bears all the trademarks of this record - Ferry's enthralling croon, Manzanera's angry soloing and Eno's loads of weird noises over rather pedestrian lyrics.
Roxy's second album is definitely an improvement over their debut in terms of atmosphere and song tightness (not to mention that the technical level of performances has certainly got better as well), but it comes at the expense of such rich, luxuriant and emotional melodies as featured on, say, 'If There Is Something'.

Citing influences as diverse as Jimi Hendrix, the Velvet Underground, and Frank Sinatra, Roxy Music had a look that likened them to the glam rockers of the early '70s, but their music couldn't be labeled so conveniently.
But their biggest influence on the '80s was no doubt the flood of new wave synth-bands inspired to make music by the likes of Roxy Music.

Evolving from the late-'60s art-rock movement, Roxy Music had a fascination with fashion, glamour, cinema, pop art, and the avant-garde, which separated the band from their contemporaries.
But within these limitations the music is quite diverse, sometimes experimental, bordering on art-rock or a hard-rocking wall of sound with a serious dose of British attitude.
Brit-pop began in the '80s and was condemned by critics to a short life span, but the music has maintained a unique slant on rock since then and continues to rock on.

Generally, their later music is slicker and musically less adventurous than that of the earlier albums; however, Ferry's apparently effortless elegance and the musical abilities of Mackay and Manzanera, are always much in evidence.
The band reformed in the early 2000s and toured extensively; notably, the only significant one-time member missing was Brian Eno.

The line up had lost the "non-musician" Eno, but in my opinion Roxy had gained a greater artist in prog-rock and Frank Zappa guest musician Eddie Jobson, a talented multi-instrumentalist who added depth to the opener "Out of the Blue", the fiery electric violin solo being his.
A great addition to any collection, and goes to show Roxy Music had to be one of the most creative and ingenius bands around both in the studio and on the stage.
