EastEnders - Art History Online Reference and Guide
EastEnders is a popular BBC television soap opera which was first broadcast on February 19, 1985.
In February 1983, two years before EastEnders hit the screen, the show was nothing more than a vague idea in the mind of a handful of BBC executives, who decided that what BBC1 needed was a popular bi-weekly drama series that would attract the kind of mass audiences ITV was getting with Coronation Street.
EastEnders is one of the more popular programmes on British television and used to regularly attract between 15 and 20 million viewers.

EastEnders is set in the fictional London Borough of Walford, however the central focus of the show is that of the equally fictional Victorian square named Albert Square.
EastEnders is one of the more popular programmes on British television and regularly attracts between 9 and 13 million viewers, while the show's ratings have fallen since its initial surge in pouplarity, the programme continues to be largely lucrative for the BBC.
John Yorke who led EastEnders through what Mal Young (the then head of BBC drama) said was one of its most successful periods in 2001, returned to the BBC as the head of drama, meaning his responsibilities included the running of EastEnders.

Roy Evans (Tony Caunter)-Was a fantastic actor and deserved more, in my opinion this was where Eastenders started to slowly fall when he died...whether this is just coincidence or what.
Roy Evans was a bold embodiment of back-to-basics Eastenders and when he was axed I remember discussing with fellow fans the absolute distain I had for the show at the time.
Eastenders no longer has this pulling power, it has nothing special to draw the audience in and uses sub-plots (the Millers) to pad out the elusive headline division.

Eastenders has never shied away from controversy, covering over the years such touchy issues as prostitution, abortion, homelessness, Alzheimer's Disease, HIV infection, breast cancer, rape and murder.
Latterly Eastenders has continued to tug at the heartstrings and keep viewers on the edge of their seats with storylines such as euthanasia issues, adoption and the burning question of 'Who shot Phil Mitchell?' which was played out in the best tradition of the classic 'whodunnit'.

Roy’s existence has thus far been defined by his mediocrity.

Welcome to Walford Web : EastEnders on the Internet
It’s true that the death of a major character is always a ratings-winner, but EastEnders goes from major drama to major drama nowadays, and fails to keep the smaller day-to-day stories on the screen that should be symptomatic of any major soap.
Back in the early days of EastEnders it was rumoured that Pete Beale would die from a heart attack one Christmas (proving that EastEnders could be just as cheerful at Christmas as it is nowadays!).
We could go on of course mentioning other deaths, like the pointless killing of Roy Evans, and Barry Evans’ death at New Year, but I’ve harped about those in my last article and I wouldn’t want to bore you, gentle readers.
