		Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night is an acclaimed 1988 Cinemax television special originally broadcast on HBO starring Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll pioneer singer/songwriter Roy Orbison.
		Filmed in fl and white, the January 3, 1988 televised special introduced Orbison to a whole new generation of fans.
		A music album was made in 1989 by Virgin Records from the televised broadcast titled "A Black and White Night Live".

		Roy Orbison doing these songs acoustically would have been special - but doing them with this superb collection of musical luminaries, some legends in their own right, is almost guaranteed to produce something not just special but immortal.
		Shadow detail is deliberately restrained, highlighting the fl and white nature of the programming and as a homage of sorts to a man famed for his fl rimmed glasses and dark suits.
		However, it has to be said that there is not an overwhelming depth to the fl and white tones and the whole show really is presented in nicely detailed grey scales in the middle of the spectrum.

		Roy's voice sounds strained when he tries to reach high notes in songs such as "Only the Lonely" and it has not aged well.
		In particular Roy's voice sounds gruff and unrefined in the Elvis Costello song "The Comedians", which is very similar to "Running Scared" in it's style but Roy is nowhere near as good vocally on this track.
		In it's favour, this concert is beautifully filmed in Black and White, superbly directed and edited, and the sound is incredible, hard to believe this concert is from 1987.

		Regarding the fl and white format.....it is sharp and clear with excellent video mixes.....you are usually on the right person at the right time throughout and the fact that it was shot at LA's Coconut Grove makes it even better.
		But what is spectacular is Roy's delivery of Blue Bayou, the sailing lyric in It's Over, the rhythm section on Candy Man, the fun in redoing his 1st hit from Sun Studios...Ooby Dooby...there isn't a track on this one that won't find a special place in your heart.
