J. Roy Thompson, 93, a Washington lawyer whose decades-long battle on behalf of three Native American tribes resulted in the largest settlement that the federal government had made in a land-rights case, died of kidney failure March 9 at his home in Silver Spring.
Thompson, known for his impish wit and his storytelling prowess, joked that he got the job only because the senator needed a male staff member to escort him to the men's room.
Thompson's practice was interrupted when he joined the U.S. Army Air Forces, working in the judge advocate general's office in Alaska and the Azores.
