First and foremost is the running audio commentary by director Roy Ward Baker and writer Nigel Kneale that was recorded last year.
Kneale jumps right in with his thoughts, while Baker, who must be up there in age, requires a little prodding to get started.
I like this chats because the film maker's have an opportunity to discuss how they made the film, yet Baker is reluctant to discuss the special effects because he says it ruins the illusion.

And thereafter Baker gives a whole kitchen sink arsenal of crawling hands, lurking eyeless figures, sinister retainers popping up from behind graves, the husband turning up with bloodied hands, superimposed hands reaching for maids and causing them to fall down the stairs and so on.
Baker contrarily spells it all out with thudding over-emphasis and leaves nothing to the imagination.
The actual rape is barely even shown, the woman being seen no further naked than a brief glimpse of a bare bottom as she runs from the bath, and the hand severing effect is weak and unconvincing.

With direction from Roy Ward Baker (THE VAMPIRE LOVERS) and a sweeping lush musical score by David Whitaker, this is an enjoyable ride.
Partly this is to the credit of Roy Ward Baker, but mostly it is due to the inspired playing of Ralph Bates and his female counterpart Martine Beswicke, each of them looking glorious and evil in what has become the signature role in both careers.
Listening to Ward Baker, Brian Clemens and Martine on the commentary track makes you realize how much was lost first by Ralph Bates' curtailed career, then by his death.

Baker layers on all of the standard ingredients for a properly gothic horror tale: flickering candelabras, a dangerous woodsman, howling wolves, spooky old paintings, and a fog-shrouded cemetery.
Not one of Roy Ward Baker's tautest works thematically, it is however a wondrously lush film that never looks low-budget.

Mappa.Mundi Magazine - Reviews - Quatermass and the Pit
Roy Ward Baker’s Quatermass and the Pit was made, like 2001, in the UK, but as a modest Hammer feature based on a popular British science fiction television series of a decade earlier.
Since Dr Quatermass, the hero of both the TV series and the movie, was unknown to American audiences, it was released in the USA as Five Million Years to Earth, where prospective viewers were wooed with a hilariously lurid trailer that is included on this DVD release.
Cities in flames!” But even here, and in what is left unsaid at the conclusion, the ingeniousness of the movie’s premise, and the force with which Kneale and Baker develop it, keep it firmly on track.
