The Royal Anglian Regiment (R ANGLIAN) is an infantry regiment of the British Army, part of the Queen's Division.
As one of the existing large regiments, the Royal Anglian Regiment is unaffected by the restructuring of the infantry that was announced in 2004.
However the Regiment is expected to regain its third battalion as succsessors to the East of England Regiment.

The Essex Regiment was formed in 1881 following the union of the 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot and the 56th (West Essex) Regiment of Foot.
In July 1920 the Essex Regiment captured Tom Hales, commander of the IRA West Cork Brigade, and Patrick Harte, quartermaster of the West Cork Brigade.
In 1964 the regiments of the East Anglian Brigade formed the new Royal Anglian Regiment.

It was formed in 1964 from the regiments of the East Anglian Brigade, which themselves had been formed through a series of amalgamations of former county regiments between 1958 and 1960.

 The Suffolk Regiment
The Suffolk Regiment has a 274 year history, and was originally raised by the Duke of Norfolk in 1685, as the 12th Regiment of Foot, to suppress the threatened Monmouth Rebellion.
The Regiment was stationed in Gibraltar for 14 years from 1769 to 1783, and was involved in the Siege of Gibraltar by the Spanish and French from 1779 to 1783.
The Royal Anglians still retain links to a Regiment in Australia and one in New Zealand resulting from this period, although the long hair and moustachios adopted in New Zealand were more short lived.

A Formation Parade to inaugurate the new regiment was held this week at Beckingham training area near Newark.  The parade saw the East of England Regiment flag lowered for the final time by Corporal Dave Metcalfe, who at 62 years old is the oldest soldier in the Battalion.
Following the flag changing ceremony the soldiers were presented with their Royal Anglian flash by the Colonel of the Regiment, Major General John Sutherell, assisted by the Honorary Colonels of each Company.
The East of England Regiment was formed in July 1999 from the amalgamation of the Royal Anglian Regiment and The Worcester and Sherwood Foresters TA Companies.

British troops - including a large contingent of soldiers of the Royal Anglian Regiment from the region - could be on their way home from Afghanistan within weeks.
Speaking in Kabul yesterday morning, a senior British military source said he was hopeful that Turkey would be taking over from the UK as lead nation in the current peacekeeping role by the end of June.

The 1 RAR shot plot records two incoming shots at 16:30, although the direction is stated to be unknown, and 5 outgoing shots at 16:45.

Great importance is attached to the historic links that the infantry, the Royal Artillery, the Household Cavalry and Royal Armoured Corps have with the areas from which they traditionally recruit.
Whereas the Scottish regiments find difficulty in recruiting, the Royal Anglian Regiment does not, and the reinstatement of the Third Battalion—the former Essex Regiment—would go a long way towards filling the Army's vacancies.
The Royal Anglian Regiment has an especially good record on retaining trained soldiers as well as on its ability to recruit them.

Battalion was on duty in Berlin, guarding the last three Nazi War criminals, Rudolf Hess, Albert Speer and Baldur Von Schirach, in Spandau Prison, as well as the "Russian War Memorial" and patrolling the Berlin Wall.
Then on the 5th October 1992 the Battalion was disbanded and its men where merged into the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Royal Anglian Regiment, and so ended the History of the 3rd Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment.
