 Welcome to Farming Views
Dairy farmers have been urged not to treat their SFP cheques - when they finally get them - as an income bonanza and go out and blow it.
Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers chairman Tim Brigstocke said neither must they include the payment into their dairy enterprise costings or they will get a totally false picture of the economics of milk production.
Mr Brigstocke pointed out it was a short term measure, which for the majority of dairy farmers based in England, would be severely eroded over the next eight years, while the trend would be more profound in the Severely Disadvantaged Areas where the payments were initially set at a lower rate.

ANGRY dairy farmers gave junior farming minister Elliot Morley a rough ride on the opening day of the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers annual event at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, yesterday.
"The current dairy regime is a text-book example of why further CAP reform is needed: it separates producers and processors from market signals, including the over-production of low-value commodity products and fails to produce sufficient returns to dairy farmers, while adding to their costs through milk quotas," he said.
He said economic research had shown that the dairy industry could compete with the rest of the world without continued support.

News UK - RABDF helps dairy farmers achieve major boost from WI - - Engormix.com
Speaking for the resolution, the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers’ chief executive, Nick Everington argued: “Dairy farmers are a hardy breed, and have been prepared in the past to work long hours, for rates of pay well below the minimum average wage in order to stay in business.
However, this is not sustainable even in the short term, nor is it fair that farmers continue to subsidise the costs of milk production while some retailers are making multi billion pound profits.
Recent farmer led initiatives have urged retailers to increase the price of milk by as much as 3.5ppl, however previous experience has shown a 1ppl increase usually ends up with farmers getting a miserly 0.3ppl.

Gwyn Jones, NFU Dairy Board chairman added: “What our combined work does show is that following last year’s British Milk – What Price 2005 report, there are plenty of factors that would justify a price increase at present, not the cuts that many producers have been subjected to.
