The Royal Australian Air Force made it's first contribution to the allied effort in Vietnam when, in August 1964, a RAAF transport flight was established in South Vietnam with three Caribou aircraft.
Number 9 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, an Iroquois helicopter squadron, was deployed in June 1966, primarily to support the activities of the Australian Task Force.
AUSTRALIAN ARMY ASSISTANCE GROUP -------------------------------- On December 9, 1971, the Minister for Defence announced that in consultation with the Vietnamese Government, Australia was to provide a 150 man Australian Army Assistance Group, including 30 instructors assigned to the training of Cambodians in Vietnam.

 RAR National History
Shortly thereafter, on 10th March 1949, His Majesty, King George VI, granted the title "Royal" to the Regiment and thus the Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) was born with 1 RAR, 2 RAR and 3 RAR.
After the withdrawal of Australian forces from South Vietnam in 1972, and as ADF manpower ceilings were reduced (National Service also ceased), in 1973 the Regiment downsized from nine to six battalions by linking six of its units to form the 2nd /4th, 8th /9th, and 5th/7th Battalions.
Later, and in response to the Australian Government's changing Defence Policy and capability requirement, the 2nd and 4th Battalions were de-linked and the 8th /9th Battalion disbanded in 1997.

 ShadowSpear Special Operations - SASR
The Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) is a Special Forces regiment modeled on the original British SAS and also drawing on the traditions of the Australian World War II 'Z' Special Force commando unit, as well as the Independent Companies which were active in the South Pacific during the same period.
The Australian Special Forces Task Group was built around 1 Squadron, with a platoon from the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment and a troop from the Incident Response Regiment available to support the SASR.
The uniform of the regiment is Australian issue camouflage and a sand-colored beret with metal gold and silver flaming Excalibur badge (often wrongly described as a winged dagger) on a fl shield.

But although The Royal Australian Regiment was the key component of the new Australian Regular Army, it was not a complete break with the past; it was built on the existing reservoir of soldiers who had seen active service in the Second World War.
On 10 March 1949 Royal assent was given and the Regiment became the Royal Australian Regiment.
The Regiment was deployed to Korea in 1950 at the outbreak of hostilities between North and South Korea, at the request of the United Nations and served there until 1956.

Covering the last troops to be withdrawn from the mainland, D and B Troops at the 171/4 Mile Peg fought the last artillery battle of all the allied regiments on the peninsula.
On Singapore Island the Regiment met the main line of the Japanese attack They sent in waves of infantry, 13 battalions against an undermanned coast line held by three Australian battalions, the 2/18th, 2/19th and 2/20th, on a front of 17,000 yards.
The Regiment was the sole artillery support of these indefensible positions, firing 4,800 rounds before being forced to retire.

After being retasked by the directive of a 2000 Defence Department report investigating Australia's SF capabilities and responsibilities this regiment, as well as its parent unit, 4th (Cdo) Bn, Royal Australian Regiment have been tasked with counterterrorism and are able to field reconnaissance and sniper units.
Its recon unit can be compared to Force Recon (US Marines) and the regular Commando regiments are similar in tasking to US Army Rangers, though they are subjected to a more arduous selection process (suffering a greater failure rate) and a longer period of training.
The unit is equipped with the M4 family of weapons, as used by the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) and 4 RAR (Cdo).

In 1997 the 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (Commando) [4 RAR (Cdo)] was re-raised (this battalion had last seen action in Vietnam as an infantry battalion) and designated a full time commando role.
Between April to October 2001 4 RAR (Cdo) was deployed to East Timor, which in turn redefined the unit as a conventional light infantry battalion for this deployment.

 The 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment
With the entry of Australian ground forces to the Korean War, its focus was on the retraining of former servicemen (K Force) who had enlisted from the Southern States to reinforce 3RAR, and many hundreds of such soldiers served in 2RAR for shorter or longer periods depending on their skill levels.
The NCOs were encouraged to join the Royal Fusilier patrols, and on the night of 30th April one such patrol became involved in a fire-fight, suffering casualties.
