The Royal College of Surgeons of England is an independent professional body committed to promoting and advancing the highest standards of surgical care for patients, regulating surgery, including dentistry, in England and Wales.
The origins of the College lie in the union in 1540 by Henry VIII of England of the Worshipful Company of Barbers (incorporated 1462) and the Guild of Surgeons to form the Company of Barber-Surgeons.
A further charter in 1843 granted it the present title of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Gilbert Primrose, who was elected Deacon of the Barber Surgeons on three separate occasions, was appointed Surgeon to King James VI of Scotland and when the King succeeded to the English throne, in 1603, Primrose went south with him and became Chief Surgeon to the Royal Household in London.
The College agitated strongly for the establishment of a Chair of Clinical Surgery in Edinburgh University and this was eventually approved in 1803.

Recognition was given to the Cecilia Street School by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and all the Professors and Demonstrators at Cecilia Street were graduates of the College.

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (Charter Amendment) Act 1965 (the "1965 Act") as referred to above was enacted on the 17th of February 1965 and was passed as a private bill for the purpose of enabling the College to enjoy the charitable status to which it is entitled.
The title "Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland" is essential to this proposed new category of member as it is consistent with the Royal College of Surgeons in England and the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, Scotland with which colleges the College has a rapport.
However, the title "Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland" also complicates the private bill because the word "member" is used throughout the charters and the 1965 Act interchangeably with the category of member known as a Fellow.

The College was built in 1835, from the designs of Sir Charles Barry, at a cost of 40,000l., and was greatly enlarged in 1852.
Sir Charles Barry, the architect of the Houses of Parliament, designed the local habitation of the Royal College of Surgeons, on the south side of Lincoln's Inn Fields and it was erected in 1835.

The Royal College is the professional society supervising surgical training, certification and service quality throughout England, and has had substantial influence on surgical practice throughout the world.
Surgeons eventually became independent, but had at the same time to deal with competition from the self-proclaimed “real physicians.” These were the bewigged courtiers who attended the Royals and other great families, drawing blood and prescribing poisons.

Beautifully sited on St Stephen's Green the building of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland was built in two phases.
The pediment has the Royal Arms and is capped by three statues - Athena (Goddess of Wisdom and War), Asclepius (God of Medicine) and Hygiea (Goddess of Health) all by John Smyth.
The RCSI played an important part in the Easter Rising of 1916 - it was occupied by rebel forces led by Countess Constance Markievicz and remained relatively unscathed although bullet holes are visible on the stonework.
