Canada's first contingent, consisting of the 2nd (Special Service) Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment of Infantry, had barely sailed for South Africa when, on 2 November 1899, the Canadian government offered a second contingent consisting of horse-mounted infantry and field artillery.
The volunteers comprising the remainder of the battalion came from cities and towns in Manitoba and the eastern provinces.
The Royal Canadian Dragoons was, in fact, perhaps the most effective Canadian unit to serve in South Africa, and among the best on either side.

The 1st, or Royal Regiment of Dragoons was raised in 1661 by the Earl of Peterborough for service in Tangier against the Moors, hence the original title, The Tangier Horse.
During the mid 18th century, the dress of the drummers and hautboys was scarlet coats lined with blue and ornamented with Royal lace with a blue stripe down the centre; their waistcoats and breeches were of blue cloth.

 Royal Canadian Dragoons
It is actually a South African sprinbok, commemorating an action in the Boer War in which a herd of springboks pranced across the battlefield saving the Royal Canadian Dragoons from being massacred by the Boers.
The Royal Canadian Dragoons adopted the springbok as their badge after an incident in the South African war (1900) when a herd interrupted a battle and saved them from the Boers.
In 1913 Royal approval to wear the springbok as the Regimental Cap and Collar Badges was given.

 THE MYSTERY OF LIEUTENANT PILKINGTON, 1ST ROYAL DRAGOONS - South African Military History Society - Journal
Thomas Douglas Pilkington was born on 19 June 1876 and educated at Eton, entering the 1st Dragoons from the Militia on 9 June 1897, aged 21.
According to The casualty Roll, Lt Pilkington T D, 1st (Royal) Dragoons, was killed in action on 10 July at Kaalboschfontein (a farm near Brakpan some 80 km away from Silkaatsnek).(22) The circumstances of his death are not stated and no burial site is mentioned; neither has the exact site of his grave been discovered.
Brompton Cemetery (managed by the Royal Parks Agency) 26 October 1994: ‘Lieutenant Thomas Douglas Pilkington was buried in this cemetery on 22nd December 1900 in a Private Brick Grave situated on Compartment 2 West at a measurement of 138’ 6” by 30’ 6”.
