Royal Dutch Shell PLC reported a 21 percent increase in fourth-quarter earnings Thursday, buoyed in part by high energy prices and its sale of some operations.
Shell said it added twice as much as it pumped when taking into account oil-rich sands, which new technologies are making possible to develop but cannot be counted as proven reserves.
Shell has been desperately seeking to secure new sources of oil since it was forced to cut proven reserves by nearly a third in the wake the scandal.

In simple terms, Royal Dutch Shell faces a number of troubling issues that include a relatively weak production profile, one of the lowest reserve replacement ratios among the majors, and problems with regard to its operations in both Russia (political pressure) and Nigeria (escalating violence).
Just as this $22 billion project is nearing completion, Royal Dutch Shell has been coming under pressure from the Russian government in the form of environmental lawsuits seeking the revocation of the project's approval -- a bald-faced attempt to allow Russian energy giant Gazprom to grab a slice of the pie.
This tactic seems to have worked; recent reports indicate that Royal Dutch Shell has offered to cede control of the project to Gazprom while retaining a blocking stake of at least 25%, in exchange for a stake in one of Gazprom's natural-gas fields and some cash.

Brent crude oil averaged over $25 dollars a barrel in the quarter, but Shell admitted the outlook was now "uncertain." Crude prices are close to their 10-year average of $19.50 as cracks appear in oil cartel OPEC's perceived ability to hold up the price.
Shell said third-quarter growth was fairly strong at 5 percent, led by a 21-percent improvement in gas volumes but dragged back by a three-percent decline in oil.
