In the 1913-1914 Enfield V-Twin the lubricating oil was contained in a glass tank attached to the frame tube that ran from the seat to the rear of the engine.
In 1927 Royal Enfield produced a 488cc with a four-speed gearbox, a new 225cc side-valve bike in 1928, and a four-stroke single in 1931.

In 1948, Royal Enfield came out with a 500cc twin (Enfield's 25bhp answer to the Triumph Speed Twin; stayed in production until 1958) and in 1949 launched the 350cc Bullet (the 499cc version was launched in 1953 but was not as popular).

Although the basic design remains un-changed from 50 years ago, the addition of an electric starter is only one of a number of refinements added over recent years including up-rated 12 volt electrics, modern headlight, indicators and coil ignition plus alternator, (replacing the magneto and dynamo).
