The Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) is a front-line support force for the Royal Navy supplying the ships of the Royal Navy at sea with fuel, weapons and stores.
RFA personnel are trained in line with their counterparts in the Merchant Navy but with additional naval training to equip them to operate in partnership with the Royal Navy in an operational environment.
The RFA provided frontline support during both Gulf Wars notably RFA Argus serving as a Casualty Receiving Ship in 1991 and Sir Galahad delivering much needed humanitarian aid to the liberated port of Umm Qasr in 2003, continuing the role of her namesake from the Falklands Campaign.

The Royal Navy is the second-largest navy in NATO in terms of the combined displacement of its fleet.
The Royal Navy was too hard-pressed in European waters to release significant forces to combat the privateers, and its large ships of the line were not very effective at seeking out and running down fast and manoueverable privateers which operated as widely spread single ships or small groups.
The re-armament of the Royal Navy was well under way by this point however, with the 1936 King George V class of 1936, limited to 35,000 tons and 14-inch armament, the aircraft carrier Ark Royal, and the Illustrious class carriers, the Town and Crown Colony classes of light cruiser and the Tribal class destroyers.

The RFA really came into its own in World War II when the British fleet was often far from available bases, either due to the enemy capturing available bases, or, in the Pacific, the sheer distances involved.
After 1945, the RFA assumed centre stage in supporting the operations of the Royal Navy in the many conflicts that the Navy was involved in.
The RFA performed important service to the Far East Fleet off Korea from 1950 until 1953, when sustained carrier operations were again mounted in Pacific waters.

She was transferred to RFA in 1905 and she served in Africa during the Boer War and in China during the Boxer Revolution.
As early as 1900 ships built for the Royal Navy were oil burners and it had purchased its first feet tanker Kharki in that year, though Burma not built until 1911 was the first tanker specifically designed for the refuelling of Battleships whilst being towed or used as a bunker barge when in harbour.
During times of War or any other extenuating circumstances when the RFA couldn’t provide the tonnage required the Admiralty would charter ships in, these ships had the prefix MFA, or Mercantile Fleet Auxiliary, as time has gone on for whatever argument one wishes to adopt this is no longer the case.

The replica of the Discovery was berthed in Jamestown for many years before Fort Rosalie was asked to bring her to the UK as part of the preparations to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the landing.
Fort Rosalie’s Commanding Officer, Captain Ian Gough RFA, said: “The Discovery sailed under the command of Captain John Ratcliffe and carried 21 of the 105 settlers to Virginia.
Now, nearly 400 years on it is a great privilege and challenge for Fort Rosalie to bring the replica of the original vessel back to the UK to take part in the 400th anniversary of the event.

In a dawn raid, RFA Wave Ruler's Royal Navy Lynx helicopter hunted down the rogue Venezuelan-registered 20-metre fishing boat Oliana 1 some 620 nautical miles north-east of Barbados and around 1,400 miles from her home port of Las Piedras.
RFA Wave Ruler's current roles include supporting other NATO nations in the Caribbean, assisting the United States Coast Guard with counter-drug operations, and providing humanitarian aid to UK dependent territories in the event of natural disasters.
RFA Wave Ruler is a fast replenishment tanker which has been employed on Atlantic patrol tasking since her arrival in theatre in April 2006.
