Linguists know very little about Old Frankish, as it attested mainly as phrases and words in the law codes of the main Frankish tribes (especially those of the Salian and Ripuarian Franks), which are written in Latin interspersed with barbarisms.
In 776, Dukes Hrodgaud of Friuli and Gisulf of Spoleto rebelled.
The Frankish border was slowly extended until 795, when Gerona, Cardona, Ausona, and Urgel were united into the new Spanish March, within the old duchy of Septimania.

The Royal Frankish Annals provides an account of the years 741 to 829, during which time the Carolingian Empire ascended to its peak of dominance and splendor.
Nithard's Histories are an eyewitness report of the wars between the sons of Louis the Pious, which began about 830 and ended with the Treaty of Verdun in 843.
The differences between the earlier and revised versions of the Annals have been indicated in the text, to insure a complete and accurate edition of significant work.

In his Life of Charlemagne, Frankish historian Einhard, who knew Charlemagne personally and presented him in the best possible light, says Carloman treated Charlemagne with "unfriendliness and jealousy," but Charlemagne endured this "most patiently, and, to the wonder of all, could not be provoked to be angry with him."

The Heroic Age: An Appeal to Rome
The Royal Frankish Annals provides the basic narrative: Between 806 and 808, Eardwulf was driven from his kingdom.
Eardwulf's expulsion from Northumbria and his subsequent restoration were the key items of interest to the author of the Royal Frankish Annals, who does not relate the nature of the dispute that caused Eardwulf to appeal to Charlemagne, or the other individuals who may have been involved.
There is enough evidence to indicate that Anglo-Saxons involved the Frankish emperor in their disputes on at least one, and possibly three occasions.

 Einhard
The most famous of his pieces was produced at the request of Charlemagne's son and successor Louis the Pious.
Einhard's literary model was the classical work of the Roman historian Suetonius, the "Lives of the Caesars." Although his work is biased in the sense that it was written as a praise of Charlemagne.
He did gloss over certain issues which would be of embarrassment to Charlemagne (such as the morality of his daughters), and we are not necessarily to believe that Charlemagne was really a giant, however it is also a fairly accurate description of events when compared to other contemporary sources.

They are known as the Annales regni Francorum, and in English they are sometimes referred to as the Royal Frankish Annals.
The section below is the annals for the years 775 and 776, in which the young king and his armies were fighting in Saxony as well as in other places.

The Franks, originally a pagan, barbarian, Germanic people who migrated over the River Rhine in the late fifth century into a crumbling Roman Empire, were, by the early eighth century, the rulers of Gaul and a good portion of central Europe east of the Rhine and followers of the Catholic faith.
In 687 Pippin of Heristal, mayor of the palace of Austrasia, ended the strife between various kings and their mayors with his victory at Tertry and practically became the sole governor of the entire Frankish kingdom.
They were married into houses of nobility and as a result of intermarriages many people of noble descent can indeed trace their ancestry back to Charlemagne.

Anyway, the introduction talks about various issues in the Annals, among which is the authors of the work and how they saw the world and how the work was used as a tool of official propaganda.
Basically, the authors assume that their side (the Frankish king) is always right and his enemies are always on the side of evil and do things out of pure hatred.

The end of the investment was brought about according to this source not by a Frankish relieving army or a successful sortie by the garrison, but by what the chronicler describes as a miracle.
Far from afraid, the Frankish defenders were prompted to undertake a sortie and vigorous pursuit of the fleeing enemy.
