Royal High School FP contact site
The Royal High was no centre of academic excellence, being a division or more beneath the major public schools of the Edinburgh Academy and Fettes and well down table of Heriots, George Watsons or the other nearest equivalents.
The school was wedded to a slapdash and arbitrary sense of discipline - a system the street wise or sly who might have needed the discipline could buck most of the time; a system that broke the meek who didn't need it.
At the Royal High it was simply time for the routine of exams and the race to see who could get the qualifications first to get out of this junior prison.

There was great rivalry between this building for the Royal High School and Burn's Edinburgh Academy in Inverleith, and Hamilton's budget was augmented to ensure his was the grandest, yet the cost of £24,000 seems a bargain, even then.
By the middle of the 20th Century the building had become too small and was difficult to adapt to the needs of a modern school, thus it was abandoned and very ordinary new buildings in the Barnton district of the city occupied in 1969.
The High School was originally founded in 1128 making it one of the oldest schools in the United Kingdom.
