Part of the Scottish Division, it was the senior regiment of Highlanders.
The regiment won honours after the Battle of the Hook during the Korean War in November 1952, and were subsequently involved in peacekeeping in various parts of the world; the same activity for which the regiment was raised 250 years earlier.
As part of the 5th Canadian Brigade, the Regiment's 1st Battalion landed in Normandy in July 1944 and participated in major combat actions afterwards including the fight for the Channel Ports, the Scheldt, the Nijmegen Salient, the Rhineland, and the final battles of the war east of the Rhine River.

The regiment was formed as the Infantry School Corps on 21 December 1883, as a regular unit that would train the Canadian militia.
The Regiment combined with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and the 42nd and 49th Canadian Infantry Battalions to form the 7th Canadian Infantry Brigade.
The regiment was transferred to Europe in February 1945 and took part in the liberation the Dutch city of Apeldoorn.

Several years later, as a move to counter the growing tide of Jacobitism in the Highlands, a suggestion was made that the government should consider raising several regiments of Highlanders commanded by English or Scottish officers of "undoubted loyalty" and officered by chiefs and chieftains of "disaffected clans".

So it was with The Royal Highlanders, the 1st Battalion went to Egypt and the 2nd remained at home for the next 18 years, serving in England, Ireland, Scotland and England again before they became due for their own tour of foreign duties.
Forming part of the Highland Brigade under Major General Wauchope – himself a former officer in the Regiment the Battalion was soon in action as the Brigade advanced in a badly managed attack on the 200 feet high Magersfontein Ridge, losing 301 out of 943 men and 17 out of 27 officers, including Wauchope himself.
All the Regiment’s battalions apart from the 1st and 4th/5th had fought at the 1st Battle of Arras in the Spring of 1917 and then in July and August came the 3rd Battle of Ypres, in which the 4th/5th were reduced by losses to the strength of a single company.

Notwithstanding this remonstrance, the government persisted in its determination to send the regiment abroad; and to deceive the men, from whom their real destination was concealed, they were told that the object of their march to England was merely to gratify the curiosity of the king, who was desirous of seeing a Highland regiment.
The Highlanders arrived in the Thames on the 4th of November, and whilst the other regiments were sent to Scotland under General Hawley to assist in quelling the insurrection, the 43d was marched to the coast of Kent, and joined the division of the army assembled there to repel an expected invasion.
The regiment remained in Ireland after its return from North America about eight years, in the course of which it was occasionally occupied in different parts of that country in aid of the civil power,--a service in which, from their conciliatory disposition, they were found very useful.

Highland dress is a extremely traditional and complex code of the wearing of certain articles of clothing, like kilts, doublets, brogues, and special belts, with combinations of a number of other accessories, like the dirk or Sgian Dubh, the broach, the sporran and others.
On the 4th of June 1795, as the regiment, then quartered at Royston, Cambridgeshire, was out on parade to fire three rounds in honor of his Majesty's birthday, the men were surprised and delighted when a large box was brought on to the field, and a red feather distributed to each soldier.

The regiment went into action for the first time in 1745 at the battle of Fontenoy.In 1751 the number was changed, the regiment becoming known as the 42nd or Highland Regiment, and seven years later the title of " Royal " was conferred.
In 1809 the 73rd, together with several other Highland regiments, were ordered to discontinue the Highland dress which was considered a detriment to recruiting.
During the war of 1914-1918 the regiment consisted of 25 battalions and fought in France and Flanders, Macedonia, Egypt, Mesopotamia and Palestine.

It was a matter of great pride to the 42nd Regiment that it was designated a "Royal" regiment in 1758 for its distinguished battle record, prior to the battle of Carillon (Ticonderoga) and at the time of the battle the Regiment had not received notice of the honor.
The 42nd Regiment was on the left in reserve on July 8, 1758 but when it saw the disastrous results of the first wave of attack on the French Lines on the heights of Carillon, the Regiment rushed into battle.
After the Regiment became a "Royal" Regiment, as was customary the facings became blue, the Royal color of the House of Hanover.

 An historical note for the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment
The 42nd was formed in May 1740 from many small independant companies throughout the highlands of Scotland, which were originally formed to combat banditry, flmail and extortion which was rife throughout the highlands of Scotland in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
The new Regiment continued to serve as the Highland Watch, in Scotland, but the British command sent the regiment as reinforcements in Flanders and Germany, in the war of the Austrian Succession.
The 73rd Regiment which served right here in Australia under Governor Lachlan Macquarie, from 1810 till 1814 was formed from the 2nd batalion 42nd in 1780 and returned to the 42nd in 1871.

 Scottish Highland Pistol (42nd Regiment - Murdoch style)
One surviving original, same style as the replica, is marked "RHR" on the barrel, standing for the Royal Highland Regiment (becoming the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment "Black Watch").
The steel pistol was used in the ranks of Highland Regiments into the 1780s, when a less expensive (and less elegant) bronze pistol began to challenge the dominance of the steel version in the ranks of Britain's Highland Regiments.

Although we have long suspected that the Regiment must have had women formally assigned to them (working for and being provisioned through their attachment to the Yorkers) we have never before found incontrovertible evidence that there were Yorker women on the ration.
The regiment's hats had been kept in store during the winter, the men wearing instead fur-trimmed, cloth Canadian caps with the blanket coats during the winter, as provided to this corps and all the British regiments prior to the onset of cold weather.
This practice of laced holes continued in effect with the regiment until it was disbanded and the correspondence on the subject is further borne out by examination of the extant short coat or "jacket" of Lieutenant Gershom French of the 2nd Battalion, now in the Canadian War Museum.
