Royal Historical Society - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is the premier society in the United Kingdom which promotes and defends the scholarly study of the past.
The Society's representative role, performed in consultation with the Historical Association and with the History at Universities Defence Group, is distinctive in focussing on historical research, and on the research aspects of the work of those professionally engaged in History.
Recent reorganisation of the Society's committees is intended to permit a larger proactive element in its representative role, with more capacity to generate and propose policy initiatives in addition to, as hitherto, reacting to proposals from elsewhere.

AIM25: Royal Historical Society: Camden Society
Membership of the Society was by annual subscription of £1, and an annual meeting was to be held on the 2 May - the birthday of William Camden (1551-1623, historian and antiquary).
The Camden Society was facing financial difficulties by the early 1880s, exacerbated by a failed project to compile a general index to the first 100 volumes that it had printed.
In 1896 it was suggested that the Society amalgamate with the Royal Historical Society, and that united membership of the two societies would be large enough to support the annual publication of two Camden volumes and one of the RHS proceedings.

Roberts - Geoffrey Elton and the Philosophy of History
And for Elton evidence was king, its use and interpretation was the linchpin of historical method and of the historian's claim to be able to discover and tell true stories about the past.
The historical method consists of the critical examination of this evidence, and, ideally, only this evidence to reconstruct the causes of historical events.
In arguing for the primacy of evidence in historical work Elton had to contend with the argument that the intrusion of human subjectivity in the interpretation and selection of the `facts' vitiated what were claimed to be true accounts of the past.

The Royal Historical Society Bibliography of British and Irish history is a database containing some 400,000 bibliographical records relating to British and Irish history, and to the British and Irish abroad, at all periods for which written evidence survives.
For the years 1975 to 2002, the Society published the Annual Bibliographies of British and Irish History, generally within nine months of the end of the calendar year in which the bulk of the material included was published.
In 1989, recognising the problems caused by the lack of an up-to-date comprehensive cumulative bibliography, the Society embarked on the preparation of an electronic version of its bibliographies, engaging in extensive additional bibliographic research in areas such as Imperial and Commonwealth history where coverage in the underpinning bibliographies was thin.

 H. P. Blavatsky and the Theosophical Movement - Historical Sketch
Who and what H. Blavatsky was and the purport of her teaching have been the earnest concern of thinkers and writers for a hundred years now, and while the public in general comprehends neither the fullness nor the majesty of her sacrifice, time is her advocate.
To attempt to chronicle the life story of H.P.B. and of the Society she founded in 1875 demands a rare combination of qualities: perception of values, devotion to the theosophic ideals, a sense of history and, above all, an identification with the ageless purpose behind the sending of a messenger.
From the first the Society stated that its main object was to disseminate Ideas which would, if put into practice, change the hearts and minds of men to better and higher things.
