The Royal Horticultural Society was founded in 1804 as the London Horticultural Society, and gained its present name in a Royal Charter granted in 1861 by Prince Albert.
It is a charity and exists to promote gardening and horticulture in Britain and Europe.
This is done through a series of flower shows and through many model gardens that are open to the public.

This society has three exhibitions every year, in May, June, and July, at its gardens at Chiswick, and distributes medals for the best flowers and fruit shown at each exhibition.
HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY, South Kensington and Chiswick, under the presidency of the late Prince Consort, was established in 1804, and incorporated in 1809.
With the object of promoting scientific gardening the Royal Horticultural Society was founded in 1804, and fourteen years later experimental gardens were established between the famous Chiswick House, where Charles James Fox and George Canning died, and Turnham Green.

In December 1838 a group of Colonists met in the court house in Gilles Lane and resolved to form an Agricultural Society ‘for the encouragement and improvements of all descriptions of agriculture and the rearing of stock'.
The first Show staged by the Society was held in the yard of Fordham's Hotel, in Grenfell Street, Adelaide, on 8 December 1840.
In 1842 the Society changed its name to ‘The Agricultural and Horticultural Society' to accommodate those members who had an interest in both industries and also to encourage orchardists and market gardeners to join.

There are various trial gardens for herbs, salad plants, vegetables and soft fruit where you can see unusual varieties and experimental methods of growing.
Next come plums, 'in short supply this year because of the severe late frost' but worth looking out for is Late Muscatel with its oozing sweet juiciness or the reddish Royale de Vilvoorde with its rich flavour.

Originally the Northern Horticultural Society, as well as maintaining a large diverse garden, they carried out plant trials, research and education on species and cultivars which are more suited to the northern part of England.
The gardens have now been taken under the wing of the Royal Horticultural Society, and the garden is now known as the RHS Garden Harlow Carr.
The gardens extend to 68 acres and were opened in 1950.
