  RIBA Library (British Architectural Library, Royal Institute of British Architects)
The RIBA Trust is delighted to announce that the British Architectural Library has purchased the Codex Stosch, one of the most significant 16th century collections of architectural drawings of the great buildings of ancient Rome, produced by Giovanni Battista da Sangallo (1496-1548), a member of Raphael’s circle.
The British Architectural Library is very grateful to the Earl of Rosse for kindly depositing on loan to the library the original manuscript of Miscelanea Structura Curiosa by the Irish architect Samuel Chearnley (1717 or 1718 - 1749), dating from 1745.
The Library was established in 1834 as the library of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA Library).

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is a professional body for architects in the United Kingdom.
It was awarded a Royal Charter in 1837, becoming the Royal Institute of British Architects in London, eventually dropping the reference to London in 1892.
RIBA runs many awards including the Stirling Prize for the best new building of the year, the Royal Gold Medal (first awarded in 1848), which honours a distinguished body of work, and the Stephen Lawrence Prize for projects with a construction budget of less than £500,000.

Whatever else may have motivated the institute to do so, one goal was surely to establish in the eyes of the public and of government that the role of the architect in planning was the most important.
It was something of a coup on the part of the Institute for Burns to agree to write the preface to the R.I.B.A. statement.
The architect should, therefore, be given the opportunity to determine the treatment, to assign positions for any monuments, to select or design the accessories, and arrange the lighting, so that all may contribute to enhance the effect aimed at.
