As their uniforms were the blue of the Royal Regiment of Artillery this group was nicknamed the "Blue Marines" and the infantry element, who wore the scarlet uniforms of the British infantry, became known as the "Red Marines", often given the derogatory nickname "Lobsters" by ordinary sailors.
Marine officers, unlike their counterparts in the regular army or navy, faced obstacles when trying to climb the social ladder, as officers in the marine corps were widely perceived as failures unable to obtain commissions in the army.
Royal Marines Band Service: The only branch of the Royal Marines which admits women and whose members are not necessarily commando-trained (and therefore may wear blue berets instead of green), the Band Service provides all the regular bands for the Royal Navy and also trains the RN Volunteer Bands.

The second, "By Sea and by Land," was obviously a translation of the Royal Marines' "Per Mare, Per Terram." Until 1848, the third motto was "To the Shores of Tripoli," in commemoration of O'Bannon's capture of Derne in 1805.
In 1848, after the return to Washington of the Marine battalion which took part in the capture of Mexico City, this motto was revised to "From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli." The current Marine Corps motto is shared with England's Devonshire Regiment.
A slang term used by sailors as early as World War II to refer to members of the Marine Corps, drawing the term from the resemblance of the Marine dress blues uniform, with its high collar, to a Mason jar.

The 21-year-old, who has not been named, was part of a group of about 30 Royal Marines taking part in the exercise when the accident happened at about 10.15am on the east side of the Ring of Steall in Glen Nevis, near Fort William.
In February 2003 the body of Adrian Hoppit, 48, a former Royal Marine, from Glasgow, was also discovered on the mountain.

This year, the Team Marine roster included Lt. Jenny Ledford and Capt. MaryKate Bailey, who were the third and fourth overall female finishers.
In 1978 the Royal Marines and Royal Navy challenged the U.S. Marines to a team competition and provided the Victory Trophy, a 44-ounce Victorian silver cup for the winners of the challenge.
