Royal Marines Base Chivenor is a British military base used primarily by the Royal Marines.
It is situated on the northern shore of the Taw estuary, on the North coast of Devon, England.
In 1994 the TWU left Chivenor merging with No 4 Flying Training School at RAF Valley, with the RAF handing the airfield over to the Royal Marines.

The most historic achievement of these Marines was the capture of the mole during the assault on Gibraltar (sailors of the Royal Navy captured the Rock itself) and the subsequent defense of the fortress alongside the Netherlands Marines in 1704.
Royal Marines Band Service: The only branch of the Royal Marines which admits women and whose members are not necessarily commando-trained (and therefore may wear blue berets instead of green), the Band Service provides all the regular bands for the Royal Navy and also trains the RN Volunteer Bands.
As the descendent of the old marine regiments of the British Army, the Royal Marines has a position in the Order of Precedence of the infantry; this is after the 49th Regiment of Foot, the descendant of which is the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment.

The Station Commander is based at Wyton but maintains offices at all 3 locations, as do his 2 functional wing commanders, OC Personnel Support Wing and OC Station Support Wing.
The only units now based at Chivenor are "A" Flight of 22 Squadron with two Sea King HAR3A helicopters for Search and Rescue duties and its HQ Flight, and No 624 Volunteer Gliding School operating Vigilant T1 motor gliders.
Units currently based at Cosford are No 1 School of Technical Training, the Birmingham University Air Squadron operating Tutor T1s, and No 633 Volunteer Gliding School with Vigilant T1s.

The worldwide deployment of British forces saw radical changes during the 1950s and 1960s and by 1971, the Royal Marines had returned from Near and Far East bases to its headquarters in Plymouth.
The Coypool base functions were transferred to Chivenor and the helicopters moved to RNAS Yeovilton to join 3 Commando Brigade Air Squadron.
Around 1995, the base finally closed and the area has now been redeveloped into a Woodland Park with riverside walk and cycle track along the old Launceston branch railway line.

Also included are 7 Battery of 29 Commando Regiment, Royal Artillery, from Plymouth, 59 Independent Commando Squadron, Royal Engineers, and elements of the Commando Logistics Regiment, both from Chivenor.

Originally HMS Daedalus, a Royal Naval Air Service training and airship base, the site that is now RAF Cranwell was taken over by the RAF in 1918 for officer cadet training, a role it fulfills to this day at the famous RAF College.
Also based on the main airfield is the RAF College Air Squadron with Tutor T1s, and on the Cranwell North grass airfield is the Cranwell Gliding Club, part of the RAF Gliding and Soaring Association (RAFGSA).
Initially a flying training base of the Royal Flying Corps in 1916, the Station closed in 1920, re-opening in 1926 as a bomber base, a role that continued until 1984 with the withdrawal from service of the last Vulcan aircraft.
