The Royal Navy is the second largest navy in the world in terms of gross tonnage (the US Navy has the world’s largest) and is currently the second largest in western Europe in terms of personnel, after the French Marine Nationale.
The Royal Navy also participated in the Gulf War, the Kosovo conflict, the Afghanistan Campaign, and the 2003 Iraq War, the last of which saw RN warships bombard positions in support of the Al Faw Peninsula landings by Royal Marines.
The Royal Navy is established under the royal prerogative and the head of the Royal Navy, known as the Lord High Admiral, and overall head of the Armed Forces, is the British Sovereign.

Royal Marines Band Service: The only branch of the Royal Marines which admits women and whose members are not necessarily commando-trained (and therefore may wear blue berets instead of green), the Band Service provides all the regular bands for the Royal Navy and also trains the RN Volunteer Bands.

A marine reserve is an area of the ocean and shore that is protected.
All the living things within the marine reserve area are protected, including their homes in the rocks, sand and coral.
Under the Marine Reserves Act 1971, the Department of Conservation is responsible for caring for and managing marine reserves - this includes: marking marine reserve boundaries, law enforcement, issuing scientific permits and monitoring environmental changes.

Marines are less generous with awards and unit identification; the rationale behind this is that as a member of an elite force, it is enough to be identified simply as a Marine.

AN officer in the Royal Marine Reserve who was called out of a lucrative Foreign Office job to serve in Bosnia has won a ground-breaking case for lost earnings.
The tribunal was told that Major Figgins, of Axmouth, Devon, left the Royal Marines in March 1995, took up a civilian post with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and became an officer in the Royal Marines Reserve.
Last September he was called up by the Reserve and believed he would be paid at his Foreign Office rate of £161.77 a day - £59,000 a year - but after Dec 31, when a Foreign Office assignment ended, his pay reverted to a major's salary of about £36,000 a year.
