The construction of the Royal Mausoleum was overseen by Thomas Nettleship Staley, first Anglican Bishop of Honolulu (1823-1898) in service to King Kamehameha IV of Hawai'i and Queen Victoria of England.
The Royal Mausoleum, known as Mauna ‘Ala in the Hawaiian language, is the final resting place of Hawai'i's two prominent royal families: the Kamehameha Dynasty and the Kalākaua Dynasty.
The grounds of the mausoleum are surrounded by a fl fence, bearing the royal seal at the gate.

It remained a royal residence until Queen Liliuokalani was deposed and the Hawaiian monarchy overthrown in 1893.
The 14,000 square feet (100'x140') building consists of a main floor, which was used for formal functions; a second floor devoted to the living quarters of the royal family, a basement, with kitchens, storerooms and offices for the household staff; and a spacious attic, principally air space, to keep the lower rooms cool.

Two sacred staffs that have stood over the crypts of Hawaiian royalty for 113 years were returned last week to the Royal Mausoleum in Nu'uanu Valley, the mausoleum's caretaker said last night.
William Kaihe'ekai Mai'oho said the staffs were returned to the mausoleum, known as Mauna Ala, after a five-year absence.
They were carried at the front of royal processions and were found in pairs outside of a royal house.
