The canal was built as a third line of defence against Napoleon, after the British Royal Navy patrolling the English Channel and the line of 74 Martello Towers built along the south coast.
As a result, both the canal and the Military Road were opened for public use with tolls being charged.
Although a barge service was established from Hythe to Rye, the canal was abandoned in 1877 and leased to the Lords of the Level of Romney Marsh.

The Royal Military Canal was placed under the authority of the Secretary of State for war.
On the west side of Hythe the canal comes close to the Romney, Hythe and Dimchurch Railway which at one third the normal gauge is said to be the smallest public railway in the world.
Appledore is said to be a delightful village though before the canal came along it was a marooned island in the centre of the marsh land.

The Royal Military Canal runs across the northern edge of the Marsh, to Winchelsea, along with a series of Martello towers built at the same time along the coast from Folkestone to Seaford.
Geologically the town had developed upon a succession of parallel terraces, rising from the level ground around the Royal Military canal up towards the steep incline upon which the parish church of St Leonard was built.
Running under Stade Street at one point, the old Royal Military canal (intended to help repel a threatened French invasion during the Napoleonic wars (1804–15)), gives central Hythe much of its character.

RMC is situated on Point Frederick, a small peninsula just to the east of the City of Kingston, Ontario, at the junction of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.
The Badge of RMC is based on the College's Coat-of-Arms and consists of the crest (the mailed fist) and the motto.
The design of the RMC flag proved to be instrumental to the final selection of the Canadian flag in 1965.

The Rideau Canal was built to provide a safe logistic link from Montreal to the Dockyard, Fort Henry was rebuilt in stone, as were several dockyard buildings, and somewhat later, a series of Martello Towers were constructed to augment the harbour defences.
The Badge of RMC is based on the College's Coat-of-Arms and consists of the crest (the mailed fist) and the motto.The motto, 'Truth, Duty, Valour', was chosen by the first Commandant, Lt-Col. E.O. Hewett.

RMC is located on Point Frederick, a small peninsula at the point where the St. Lawrence River leaves Lake Ontario and where the Rideau Canal System starts.
Additional military fortifications near by are Fort Frontenac, originally established in 1673 across the Rideau River from Point Frederick and Ft Henry, constructed between 1832-36.
The RMC Flag is reputed to have been the inspiration for Dr. George Stanley, who was the Dean of Arts at RMC, in his design for the new Canadian Flag which was adopted in 1965.

The Royal Military Canal stretches for 28 miles hugging the old cliff line that borders the Romney Marsh from Hythe in the north east to Cliff End in the south west.
The canal is also a haven for some of the special wildlife of the Romney Marsh, Kingfishers can be regularly seen and during the summer months the canal comes alive with patrolling dragonflies and noisy Marsh Frogs.
The Government abandoned the canal in 1877 and leased it to the Lords of the Level of Romney Marsh.

Forrest Royal's next deployment, between 26 August 1952 and 29 January 1953, was for a combination of NATO exercises off the coast of Norway, visits to principal ports in northern Europe, 2 months with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean, and antisubmarine exercises with British ships off Northern Ireland.
Forrest Royal sailed on through the Suez Canal to bring her additional strength to the 7th Fleet as it intensified its activities in the Taiwan Straits in response to renewed Communist shelling of Quemoy and Matsu through September.
A highlight of Forrest Royal's operating schedule in 1959 was her participation in Operation "Inland Sea," the movement of a major naval task force into the Great Lakes in connection with the ceremonial opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway.

The Royal Military Canal is a prominent feature on the marsh, and its construction in the first five years of the 19th century must have caused some consternation among the marsh smugglers.
The canal was intended to prevent a French invasion, but it was equally effective at stopping the movement of contraband from the marsh coast to the markets inland.
