Later he was accepted in the band of the Royal Highland Fusiliers, in which he continued his musical advancement whilst serving in Singapore, Gibralter, the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.
His progression into the world of Military Music continued when he was selected to attend the Bandmaster's course at Kneller Hall, the world famous Royal Military School of Music.

There was a growing desire on the part of military musicians to take their trade to the public, a dawning awareness of the potential social role of bands; massed band events were clearly a part of that future, and common standards an essential prerequisite.
By the mid-1850s, then, there was a sense of dissatisfaction with how military music had previously been structured; throughout the upper echelons of the hierarchy, pressure was building for reform.

And it was Jethro Tull that led Palmer to his own recording career, when he was engaged in the 1980's to arrange and conduct an orchestral tribute album to the band entitled A Classic Case, which became the first in a series of such albums devoted to the work of Yes, Genesis et al.
Palmer's later orchestral tribute albums have included re-arrangements and recordings of the music of the Beatles and Queen, and an album of Norwegian pop music standards arranged for orchestra.

On the 20th May 1903 the King approved the transfer of responsibility for the provision of music throughout the British Fleets to the Royal Marines and, in consequence, the Royal Naval School of Music was instituted at the Royal Marine Artillery Barracks at Eastney, Portsmouth.
The new Royal Naval School of Music was an entirely independent organisation and as such it needed a Commandant and Staff, similar to the British Army’s School of Music at Kneller Hall.

Robert Washburn is Dean and Professor Emeritus and Senior Fellow in Music at the Crane School of Music of the State University of New York at Potsdam.

Edwards was born in 1912 and had been writing music from his school days as a pupil of St. Peter's Church Boy's School.
He also composed "Welcome to Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II" which was sung in the presence of the Queen when she opened the St. Elizabeth School in St. Joseph during the official visit to the island in February, 1966.

The Duke had an ear for music, and he listened to Henry Schallehn, civilian Bandmaster for the 17th Lancers (his former regiment), when he recommended the establishment of a military school of music to prevent future musical debacles.
The record highlighted regimental music of both former regiments and demonstrated the skill of the two bands in playing many combined pieces for band and pipes, an innovation which was relatively new in British military music.

For over twenty years, he served with the Jamaica Military Band of the Jamaica Defence Force, the last nine of which he was the Bandmaster holding the of Warrant Officer First Class.

He wrote down in musical notation, the cries of the street vendors of that time and these were sung by Granville Campell, the Jamaican tenor from Spanish Town.
He joined the Royal Air Force during the war and stayed on in England to study medicine at the University of London.
