Greenwich Hospital was established in 1694 by Royal Charter for the relief and support of seamen and their dependants and for the improvement of navigation.
In 1869 the Hospital was closed, and in 1873 the complex of buildings became the Royal Naval College, where officers from all over the world came to train in the naval sciences.

The Royal Naval College, Greenwich, was a Royal Navy training establishment between 1873 and 1998, in the centre of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site in London.
It provided a number of courses for naval officers including being home to the Royal Navy's staff college, the staff course providing advanced training for mid-ranking officers.
In late 1999, the University of Greenwich began teaching in the Queen Anne, Queen Mary and King William Courts, and in October 2001, the Trinity College of Music began teaching in King Charles Court.

Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC), Dartmouth, is the location of initial officer training in the Royal Navy, and is located on a hill overlooking the town of Dartmouth in the county of Devon, England.
The college was originally known as the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, and as a Royal Naval shore establishment was additionally known by the ship name HMS Britannia.
With the closure of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, in 1998, BRNC Dartmouth is the sole remaining naval college in the United Kingdom.

It was renamed the Palace of Placentia, and was to become the principal Royal palace for the next two centuries.The palace was extensively rebuilt during the period, especially during the reign of Henry VII.
For a while some ward spaces were used as museum rooms of the Naval College, though subsequently all the ward spaces were sub-divided in one way or another for use as lecture theatres, classrooms and offices, together with some residential accommodation.
A few years ago it was decided that the staff colleges of the Navy, Army, and Air Force should be merged into one, and this, of course, meant that the Greenwich buildings would be no longer required by the Navy.

The Old Royal Naval College stands on a site originally occupied by a Tudor palace called Placentia, which was the favourite residence of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I but it fell into disrepair.
The Old Royal Naval College was designed by Sir Christopher Wren as a Royal Hospital for Seamen following Queen Mary II's wish that the King's House at Greenwich be converted to a hospital for wounded sailors (much like Les Invalides in Paris).
The College remained as such until 1997 when the decision was taken by the Ministry of Defence to close it.

Born in Bellerive, Tasmania, in 1907, Stanley Darling was educated at Hutchins School and at the University of Tasmania, graduating as a Bachelor of Engineering in 1929.

The Royal Naval Division monument has been moved from the grounds of the old Royal Naval College Greenwich, and will be re-installed at its original home of the balustrade at the old Admiralty Building, and re-dedicated by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.
The RND Memorial commemorates no fewer than 45,000 casualties sustained by the Royal Naval Division in World War I. The Division was formed in 1914 by the First Sea Lord, Winston Churchill, as an intervention and raiding force.
The memorial was rebuilt at Greenwich in 1951, but when links with the Royal Navy were severed with the closure of the College it was deemed an appropriate opportunity to return the memorial to its rightful place in the heart of London.
