Ngāti Tumatauenga or New Zealand Army is the land armed force of the New Zealand military and comprises around 4,500 regular personnel and 2,500 non-regulars and civilians.
New Zealand decided in 2003 to replace its existing fleet of M113 Armored Personnel Carriers, purchased in the 1960s, with the LAVIII [1], and the M113s were decommissioned by the end of 2004.
British forces and Māori fought in various New Zealand Wars starting in the north of the country in 1845, and culminating in major campaign in the Waikato in the mid 1860s, during which settler forces were used with great effect.

In 1964 the ten separate Regiments of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Corps were rearranged and became the seven Battalions of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment.
The alliance between this Regiment and the Taranaki Regiment was sanctioned in 1913.
The alliance between the Wellington, West Coast and the Royal Hampshire Regiment was formed on the battlefields of the Gallipoli and sanctioned in 1925.

 New Zealand soldier found mutilated in East Timor
The soldier, Leonard William Manning, 24, a private of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, was on a patrol tracking militia in the rugged Suai border area on Monday when gunmen crossing over from West Timor shot him.
During a Friday Security Council debate on East Timor, New Zealand's U.N. ambassador, Michael John Powles, announced that Manning's body ``was found to have been mutilated'' when it was recovered hours after he was killed, the first U.N. soldier to die in combat in East Timor.
Powles said New Zealand demanded that ``those responsible for this death be brought to justice.'' He said that ``the large scale presence of refugees provides cover for the militia's existence and activities.''

 NZDF - More NZ Troops for Timor
These soldiers are the second contingent of New Zealand Defence Force personnel to deploy in support of current operations in Timor Leste.
Prime Minister Helen Clark announced early this morning that the government is dispatching an RNZAF 757, a Hercules C130, and New Zealand army personnel to Darwin today.
"New Zealand and Australian officials are continuing to talk with Timor Leste representatives about the details of engagement in Timor so that appropriate rules of engagement can be determined, Helen Clark said.

Brigadier Howie was posted to 1st Battalion Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment in Singapore on 8 November 1979 and was employed as a Platoon Commander.
On his return to New Zealand on 4 August 1980, Brigadier Howie was posted to 4th Battalion (Otago and Southland) and assumed the appointment of Adjutant.

In 1953, the battalion served in Austria where new colours were presented and after a short stay in England were sent to Cyprus where they had arduous duty during the rebellion there.
The part played by the regiment can be seen at the cemetery at Saint Symphorien where lies the graves of twice as many Die-Hards as the regiment with the next highest casualties.
The regiment was the first regiment to sail through the Suez Canal in 1870, after it was opened.

The New Zealanders are working as part of an Australian led coalition.
The first New Zealand ground forces arrived in Timor-Leste on Saturday 27 May. The 39 soldiers, an Infantry Rifle platoon, have secured the New Zealand Embassy and are now working alongside Australian forces.
The deployment of New Zealand Defence Force personnel and transport of stores has been undertaken by Boeing 757 and C-130 Hercules aircraft from the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
