Before establishment of the navy, the people of New Zealand paid for the building of the battlecruiser HMS New Zealand, which was at the Battle of Jutland and which served the Royal Navy with distinction.
The New Zealand Division became the Royal New Zealand Navy when the name was granted by King George VI on 1 October 1941, and by the end of World War II the RNZN had over sixty ships in commission.

In addition to twelve batteries of garrison artillery in the various coastal centres from Auckland to Invercargill, the New Zealand Naval Volunteer Artillery corps was formed to man the coastal batteries in the forts at the four main ports and at several secondary ports.
An event that was to have an important bearing on New Zealand naval policy in later years was the official opening (in which the Australian squadron took a major part) on 16 February 1888 of the Calliope graving dock constructed by the Auckland Harbour Board at Calliope Point on the Devonport shore.
A new agreement was reached at the end of 1935 whereby the Harbour Board transferred to the Crown the area of 8 ½ acres adjacent to the dry-dock occupied by the naval base, together with a section of the seabed in Stanley Bay.

NZNB report 1955   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
To fill this new role the Royal New Zealand Navy must have two functions: it must be sufficiently operational to have ships, which can be dispatched at short notice should the need arise, and it must have a sufficiently large training framework to enable it to expand in the event of war.
The reporting organisation in the New Zealand area was activated and reserve officers were appointed to the main ports in New Zealand to carry out naval control of shipping duties during the period of the exercise.
The Royal New Zealand Navy benefits considerably from the close liaison it maintains with the Royal Navy, and unity of thought and method is a major contribution to Commonwealth defence.

From then on she began a pattern of exercises and deployments that is familiar to most in the RNZN – the shake down in the Hauraki Gulf and the Bay of Plenty; the work ups off Australia and the regular deployments to the annual Five Power Defence Arrangement exercises in the South China Sea.
Operating on a four month training cycle, the ship, with a reduced ships company and high proportion of trainees played an essential role in rapidly giving many new sailors the sea-training and professional experience which is essential if the RNZN is to both retain its professionalism and pass it on to new generations of sailors.
