During the cold war, the Royal Norwegian Navy was optimized for sea denial in coastal waters, in order to make an invasion from the sea as difficult and costly as possible.

Bamse, which means teddy bear, sailed to Britain on the Royal Norwegian Navy (KNM) minesweeper Thorodd in 1940, part of the flotilla that carried King Haakon VII into safety, newspaper The Scotsman reports.
The mascot of the Royal Norwegian Navy, Bamse regularly sailed at the front gun tower of the ship when the Thorodd went into battle, and only left his post when fighting ended, The Scotsman reported.
On July 4, 2004 the crew of the Norwegian submarine KNM Utvær held a memorial celebration in Montrose to honor the 60th anniversary of Bamse's death.

History for the PTF began in the late 1950's when the prototype motor torpedo boat NASTY was developed for the coastal anti-invasion mission of the Royal Norwegian Navy, as a follow on to their U.S. built PTs and British Fairmile "Ds".
First fit in the Royal Navy DARK class in 1953, these engines have since served in 18 navies, and have operated from the arctic to the tropics.
Royal Norwegian Naval experience with the engines has been excellent, with overhauls scheduled after normal operations of 1,500 hours a year.

Six Norwegian soldiers were injured after a stone- and grenade-throwing mob attacked the Norwegian-led base in Meymaneh in Afghanistan on Tuesday February 7.
This was announced by the Norwegian foreign minister Jonas Gahr Støre and the defence minister Anne-Grete Strøm Erichsen in parliament on 9 November.

The team found that of the 114 children of parents who had served on the ship, eight had been born with birth defects and six were stillborn.

On Friday, October 28, the unique and majestic 91-year-old sailing ship HNoMS Statsraad Lehmkuhlö of the Royal Norwegian Navy arrived in Baltimore's Harbor after after an 11-week transatlantic voyage from the west coast of Norway and a stop in Norfolk, Va. The ship will leave for England on Friday, November 4.
On this voyage, the Statsraad Lehmkuhl is sailed by the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy's 1st year officer cadets, who are participating in leadership training and teambuilding exercises during the trip.
Stripped of modern communication technology, the students are forced to work together to overcome the challenges and dangers of traveling the seas by sail.
