While a popular tune, the song gained greater notoriety when it was adopted as a rallying cry by the Royal Rooters, a collection of loyal Southie fans led by Michael T. "Nuf Ced" McGreevy, owner of the 3rd Base saloon.
(It was a best of 9 series; 5 wins were needed to win the series.) The Royal Rooters began rallying their team with every song they could think of; ultimately "Tessie" helped win the day.
The Murphys said it was their intent to "bring back the spirit of the Rooters and to put the Red Sox back on top." Oddly enough, the goal of the Murphys was realized when later that year the Boston Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years.

When the American League came to town in 1901, the Royal Rooters transferred their affections and hortatory chants to the Red Sox.
The Rooters were also a force in the Red Sox World Series wins of 1912, '15, and '16, though by the championship season of 1918 they were gone.

The Royal Rooters are pleased to announce that they have left the Huntington Avenue Fairgrounds crossed the Fenway headed up Jersey Street to the corner of what is now Yawkey Way and Brookline Avenue to their new home, Fenway Park.
The Rooters make this move as the Red Sox did before them on the same week the Titanic sank 89 years ago.
