The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys)
The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys) (SCOTS DG) is the senior Scottish regiment of the British Army and Scotland's only cavalry regiment.
The regiment has won numerous battle honours and two Victoria Crosses, and, through the Royal Scots Greys, is the oldest surviving Cavalry Regiment of the Line in the British Army.

The Scots Greys was a dragoon regiment of the British Army from 1678 until 1971, when they amalgamated to form The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys).
In 1713 they were renumbered the 2nd Dragoons, as it was established that only one regiment of English dragoons had existed prior to their creation.
The eagle is displayed in the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards museum in Edinburgh Castle.

His father served on attachment with The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and it was from this attachment, and the connections made during it, that Richard decided that he wanted to join the Regiment.
Richard was commissioned into The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards on 8 August 2004 and joined the Regiment in Fallingbostel that Summer, joining D Squadron as a Troop Leader.
He was enormously proud to be a soldier and in particular to be a member of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.  He was very well aware of the dangers that he and others faced in Iraq, but he believed that the work they were doing was gradually making life better for the Iraqi people.

The history of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards is the record of three ancient regiments: The Royal Scots Greys, the 6th Dragoon Guards and the 3rd the Prince of Wales Dragoon Guards.

1971 - The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys), on amalgamation with the 3rd Carabiniers, Prince of Wales's Dragoon Guards.
In 1681 King Charles II by Royal Warrant authorised the raising of three more troops and formed the six troops into a regiment which was styled the "Royal Regiment of Scots Dragoons." The regiment wore coats of stone grey cloth.
The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are still an active serving regiment in the British Army.

 Pipes and Drums
The Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon guards have their origin in the small pipe band which came to the Scots Greys in 1946 as a result of demobilisation of certain Scottish Territorial Armoured Corps units.
The sporran is of grey horse hair, reminiscent of the grey horses, with tassels of fl and red hair similar to the jowl plumes which hang from the officers bridles.
The plaid brooch bears the White Horse of Hanover and the Eagle and Carbines badge is worn on the sporran and as a plume clasp.

The Royal Dragoon Guards formed on 1st August 1992 as a result of the amalgamation of the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards and the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards.
The Royal Dragoon Guards now carries with it the traditions and history of four of the finest regiments in the British Cavalry; the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards, the 5th Dragoon Guards, the 7th Dragoon Guards and the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons.
All four were raised between 1685 and 1689, during the protracted conflict between James II and William of Orange for the English throne.
