Scotsman.com News - Features - Royal Scottish National Orchestra: Mozart by Candlelight
In this first "pops" concert of the season, the soloist in Mozart's Piano Concerto No 21 was the 22-year-old 2004 Scottish International Piano Competition winner, Tanya Gabrielian.
Despite the energetic spring of the orchestra's opening, her performance short-measured on spark and colour.
AS RSNO associate conductor James Lowe said at Friday's performance at the Usher Hall, this was an evening of just about every well-known piece by Mozart.

Symphony Orchestras - The Classical Music Beat
At first the orchestra was an aristocratic luxury, performing privately at the courts of the princes and nobles of Italy; but in the 17th century performances were given in theatres, and Germany eagerly followed.
Full size orchestras may sometimes be called "symphony orchestras" or "philharmonic orchestras"; these prefixes do not indicate any difference either to the instrumental content or role of the orchestra, but can be useful to distinguish different orchestras based in the same city (for instance, the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra).
Nowadays, the musicians are usually led by a conductor, although early orchestras did not have one, instead being led by the principal violinst or the harpsichordist.

classical music - andante - royal scottish national orchestra's departing music director says it should leave its glasgow home for edinburgh
Last night, Louise Mitchell, director of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, said it was unlikely the orchestra would ever leave the city but said the base of any national orchestra was a "red herring".
If the orchestra did leave Glasgow, it may not affect the hall's programme, as the orchestra would still have to perform in the city as part of its national remit.
Lazarev believes that the RSNO should look to the example of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, which is based at the Philharmonic Hall in the city and has full-time access to it.

Woods had held the positions since April 2004 but after being offered the position at the Royal Scottish National orchestra (RSNO) felt it was the right time to return to the UK.
RSNO is one of the leading orchestras in Europe, founded in 1891 and given a Royal patronage in 1991.
The instruments made by Antonio Stradivari, Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu and other masters of the 17th and 18th centuries were bought from philanthropist Herbert Axelrod before Wood's arrival at the orchestra and were deemed to be over valued resulting in much criticism over the purchase and of the handling of the situation by the orchestra.

Currie’s performance last night with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra wasn’t the most dynamic on offer.
However, the support from the RSNO wasn’t always sharp and incisive enough to support that approach, and the final moments, when the soloist processes to the set of tubular bells at the rear of the orchestra, fell short on dramatic impact.
His tendency has usually been slightly to underplay the theatrical element and let the music speak for itself, and he certainly highlighted some gorgeous subtleties by doing so.

On the whole, David Lloyd-Jones and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra turn in a more satisfying and characterful performance of The Planets plus Pluto than we heard on Hyperion's disc containing the latter's premiere, but even these players fail to make the case for Colin Matthews' pointless, ugly, unmusical appendix to Holst's masterpiece.
As for what Holst actually wrote, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra has the work under its skin.
Actually, what makes this disc worth owning isn't The Planets, but The Mystic Trumpeter, a gorgeous Whitman setting for soprano and orchestra that deserves far more attention on disc than it has received to date.

He knows when to back off and let the orchestra have the spotlight, and together with Alsop manages a genuine dialog in such passages as the finale's second calm episode (music that's pure Prokofiev in its ironic wit).
It's interesting how closely this finale resembles that of Ginastera's First Piano Concerto, composed at the same time, and both seem to be taking the finale of Bartók's Second Piano Concerto as a model.
Prutsman puts steel into the music where required (the opening cadenza and much of the finale), but he offers a slow movement of great delicacy and tenderness too.
