The Royal Society of Edinburgh is pleased to respond to the Scottish Arts Council’s consultation onScottish Arts in the 21st Century.
One positive example of such co-operation is a project to raise the cultural profile of the visual arts in Scotland being undertaken by the University of Edinburgh, in collaboration with the Edinburgh College of Art, the National Galleries and the National Museums of Scotland, and in affiliation with the University of St. Andrews.
In resourcing the arts, it should be recognised that the numbers actively contributing to the visual arts and crafts, music and drama, literature, film and television are proportionally large for a small country.

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts and in 1843 he became an Associate of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
In 1842 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts, and in 1843 an Associate of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
In the Royal Society's splendid "Catalogue of Scientific Papers" we find that from 1843 to 1864 (both inclusive) he published, in recognized scientific journals alone, upwards of eighty papers - many of these being exhaustive essays on mathematical or physical questions, and all, save one or two, containing genuine contributions to the advance of science.

Nicoll was a working member of the Canterbury Society of Arts from 1905 and that year was awarded their bronze medal for a seascape in oils.
In 1913 he exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts.
He regularly exhibited with art societies beyond Christchurch and with the Australian Painter-Etchers' Society and the Society of Artists, Sydney, in 1928.

The Society acts as trustee for administration of the Bruce Medal fund and the award is made by a joint Committee appointed by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Royal Physical Society and the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
It is awarded quadrennially for a paper on a scientific subject presented in the first instance to the Royal Society of Edinburgh, preference being given to a paper containing a discovery.
In 1989, the Society received the entire estate of the late Mrs Agnes Dryerre, to establish a fund to be used principally to support research in Physiology.

The remainder of the evening, until 10.0pm, is spent in learning, then dancing to recorded music, dances of the three main types; jigs, reels and strathspeys.

The Royal Scottish Society of Arts (R.S.S.A.) was founded in 1821 as 'The Society for the Encouragement of the Useful Arts in Scotland' and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1841.
It was concerned with the fields that we would now describe as science, technology, engineering and manufacture, but which were then known as the useful arts, as opposed to the fine arts.
