Chemistry (from Greek χημε?α khemeia[1] meaning "alchemy") is the science of matter at the atomic to molecular scale, dealing primarily with collections of atoms, such as molecules, crystals, and metals.
Chemistry deals with the composition and statistical properties of such structures, as well as their transformations and interactions to become materials encountered in everyday life.
Chemistry also deals with understanding the properties and interactions of individual atoms with the purpose of applying that knowledge at the macroscopic level.

Women In Chemistry   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
This study was prompted by earlier RSC research, which showed that although equal numbers of men and women consider a career in chemistry, they don't choose the same career pathways: women in particular are leaving academe in droves.
The particularly competitive culture in chemistry was also commented on by the women, who are more interested in exploring how to reach a solution and in learning from the process, rather than in arriving at a result and rushing to publish.
Although the RSC's study did not try to provide the answers to this problem, the Society is hoping that the points raised may go some way towards improving the situation by highlighting the issues that merit further discussion and investigation.

An evaluation of Royal Society of Chemistry careers advice and materials
The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is the largest organisation in Europe for advancing the chemical sciences.
In addition, whilst pupils’ attitudes towards chemistry reveal a generally positive picture in terms of the perceived benefits of the chemical sciences, there is also a perception that chemistry can be a difficult and abstract subject (Jagger, 2004).
The RSC has commissioned NFER to undertake a study to determine how pupils make subject and career choices regarding chemistry, and to evaluate the materials it produces to promote the chemical sciences to young people.
