The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene was founded in 1907 with Sir Patrick Manson and the Nobel Laureate Sir Ronald Ross as its first and second Presidents - the founding fathers of tropical medicine.
The objectives of the Society - to promote health and to advance the study, control and prevention of disease in man and other animals in warm climates - remain highly relevant today, since the global burden of disease is still disproportionately borne by the developing countries of the tropics and subtropics.
The Society has established training frameworks for physicians in tropical medicine to meet the changed requirements within the UK for the professional training of clinicians, and continues to play a role in ensuring the maintenance of key clinical skills.

Cardiothoracic Section of The Royal Society of Medicine
Secondly, a number of cardiothoracic trainees had used the superb Royal Society of Medicine library during their 'research year' and had been surprised to discover that despite the prevalence of cardiovascular disease within our community there was no cardiac orientated section.
Interestingly, Tudor Edwards, one of the founding members of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland in 1933, had proposed in 1944 that the Society of Thoracic Surgeons should be enlarged to include physicians, radiologists, pathologists and naesthetists interested in thoracic problems.
Following several planning meetings The Cardiothoracic Section of the Royal Society of Medicine was subsequently inaugurated in January 1991 in order to "cultivate and promote cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgery and medicine and the sciences connected with them".
