 Biography for: Arthur Melville
Arthur Melville was a watercolour painter of genre and figure subjects and an illustrator.
He was elected a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1891, an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1886 and an associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1888, becoming a full member of the latter in 1899.
Melville was among those proposed invitees to a dinner organised by W. Symons to congratulate JW on being made an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Munich, a dinner which was to be held at the Criterion in Piccadilly on 1 May 1889 (transcription">#00631).

As public interest in 'High Art' waned his initial attention to this form mostly, but not exclusively, was overtaken by portraiture and his beloved watercolours in which he engaged continuously on regular visits to Scotland and tours of Europe.
His Wesleyan connections proved pivotal leading to commissions to paint portraits of many well known people including King George V and Queen Mary of which there are a number in The Royal Collection and elsewhere.

He went on to establish his own portrait practice, exhibiting 288 works at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters between 1876 and 1935.
His clever use of fluid paint, striking colour and harsh artificial lighting, reminiscent of Walter Sickert’s style, are well seen in his portrait of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Frederick Richards in the National Maritime Museum, London (Greenwich Hospital Collection).
His high-profile works and successful style won him many honours: in 1900 he became a fellow of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters; in 1910 he was elected Royal Academician; and in 1917 he was knighted.

I am currently researching the life and work of the Scottish born portrait painter, William Bruce Ellis Ranken (1881-1941), who was "a close friend of John Singer Sargent" and I am anxious to find out whether there is indeed any evidence of this friendship from any JSS correspondence or records [Evidence Found].
He was acclaimed as “a fine technician of delightful color, a sensitive artists.” He was a mural painter of merit, but most of all the world claimed his interiors of fine rooms; the fountains of famous castles – Versailles, Madrid.
