The objective of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry (KSLA) is, with the support of science and practical experience and in the interest of society, to promote agriculture and forestry and associated activities.
Through its committees and working parties, the Academy observes developments in agriculture and forestry, it takes the initiative on particular issues, engages specialists for presentations of facts, is consulted by the Swedish Government on matters relating to agriculture and forestry, and in particular encourages young researchers by distributing research grants and bursaries from its funds.
The KSLA also manages a specialised scientific library of agriculture and forestry, chiefly as a service to all levels of researchers of the history of agriculture and forestry and to Academy members.

The World Food Summit highlighted the importance of agricultural research, and biotechnology in particular, as most important elements in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.
More specific regulatory mechanisms include a code of conduct on biotechnology as it affects the conservation and use of genetic resources for Food and Agriculture; this is currently under development by FAO member countries within the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.
Commissions and fora within FAO are facilitating discussion among member countries on a wide range of issues relating to the debate on genetic engineering and GMOs in agriculture, forestry and fisheries.

Sweden and the CGIAR Day “After Johannesburg: Innovations in Agriculture for Food Security, Poverty Alleviation and Growth” was inaugurated by Minister for Development Cooperation, Carin Jamtin, at the Royal Swedish Academy for Agriculture and Forestry (KSLA), in Stockholm on October 20.
The discussions continued in the main lecture building of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala on October 21 co-sponsored by the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida), the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (Formas), SLU and the CGIAR.
Two young Swedish scientists who collaborated with ICRAF and ILRI during their doctoral and post-doctoral studies presented their views on working with CG Centers in the field, prior to joining a panel discussion on how to enhance Swedish scientific participation in, and interaction with, the CGIAR.
