As you know, under his leadership this distinguished Academy was amongst the first to alert the world to the risks we face from the growing pressures on the Earth's resources and life support systems resulting from escalating human numbers and activities.
Science has taught us that environment and development issues are global in scale and systemic in nature and, if we are to remain within safe limits, we must manage the changes that are shaping our future.
In my long experience with science, I have noted with concern that despite the growing international dimensions of virtually all of the activities that bear on sustainable development, there is still a great deal of parochialism amongst some of the important actors in respect of these issues in the scientific, technological and educational communities.
