As you know, under his leadership this distinguished Academy was amongst the first to alert the world to the risks we face from the growing pressures on the Earth's resources and life support systems resulting from escalating human numbers and activities.
Science has taught us that environment and development issues are global in scale and systemic in nature and, if we are to remain within safe limits, we must manage the changes that are shaping our future.
In my long experience with science, I have noted with concern that despite the growing international dimensions of virtually all of the activities that bear on sustainable development, there is still a great deal of parochialism amongst some of the important actors in respect of these issues in the scientific, technological and educational communities.

 Air Warfare
In the course of the Second World War air power consolidated its status as an equal military branch with the others, and in many countries it was only after that that the air force became independent and its leadership could properly apply the methods called for by the special characteristics of air operations.
The Korean War was a small-scale extension of the Second World War in a sense, in which jet fighters dominated the sky and the United Nations' troops typically made heavy use of close supporting fire from the air even in the case of pinpoint targets on the front line.
Many of the countries belonging to the coalition were ones that had witnessed the rise of air power from the early days, and neither the manner of operation nor the outcome was any surprise for their leaders, in fact it was to be anticipated on the basis of the pre-war simulations and exercises.

In the present-day situation, it's fairly obvious that the American preparations for war on Iraq are close to a point of no return and that the risk of war must be judged as very great.
The only clearly stated motive to begin a war against Iraq are to prevent weapons of mass destruction from getting into the wrong hands and perhaps be used on an unprotected civilian populations, particularly in the USA.
Another solution could be to abstain from open acts of war, at least until a global defence system against the actual weapon systems is in operation.

 South Africa's New Academy
The Academy was established in 1996 after public officials in the newly created democracy realized that neither of the nation's long-standing academies, the Royal Society of South Africa or the South African Academy for Science and Arts, "could inclusively represent the whole of the South African scientific community."
The nation's new post-apartheid society, they concluded, would need a new science academy as part of a larger effort to build credibility and confidence among institutions in South Africa and throughout the rest of the world.
Yet there is another dimension to the Academy's work that Gevers maintains could prove equally important to the institution's future: its relationship with scientists and scientific academies in the rest of the world, particularly in Africa.
