The Metre Rule, the hallowed formula of yacht design, has produced several decades of America’s Cup yachts and a century of 6-metre challenges between the Atlantic seaboards.
Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s Saskia has won the 8 Metre class at the Metre Class Centenary Regatta at Cowes, scoring her third successive win overnight on The Solent in a regatta shortened by bad weather.
Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron members John and Michael Stephen and their crew have received the Sira Cup from King Harald V of Norway after winning the Classic division of the 8-Metre Centennial World Championship.

1815 — 1825 The Yacht Club, as the Squadron was first known, was founded in the Thatched House Tavern in St James’s, on the 1st of June 1815.
They had been entertained before in the “Deer Park”, as the lawn was named in their honour, but it was not until the Squadron secured the ballroom below Castle Rock (now the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club) from Rosa Lewis of Cavendish Hotel fame, that they had a roof of their own.
The Pavilion also enabled the Squadron to cross burgees with the New York Yacht Club in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Schooner America’s famous victory of 1851.

  British Yacht Ensigns (Introduction)
Permit: The Yacht must be issued with a Permit by a Yacht Club pursuant to the granting of a Warrant to that Club by the Secretary of State for Defence.
A Yacht which is the property of a Limited Company may be eligible for a permit provided the provisions of Condition 5 are complied with, and the user is a British Subject and a Member of a designated Yacht Club.
When a Yacht is sold, there is a change of ownership, or the owner ceases to be a member of the Club, the Permit must at once be surrendered to the Secretary of the Club who shall forthwith cancel it.

 Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron Syndicate
Royal Melbourne chief commodore Alan Saunders said yesterday a successful challenge against the Swiss titleholders would mean the 2011 America's Cup would likely be held outside Port Phillip Bay.
Mr Saunders confirmed the squadron was negotiating with the Sydney group to run the campaign from his St Kilda pier headquarters.
"The reason we wanted the burgee (flag) of the Royal Melbourne Squadron is that the squadron happens to be a sailing squadron as opposed to a quasi-social squadron," she said.

The masthead flags that were flown on the Royal Yacht "Britannia" when HM Queen Elizabeth II was embarked were the Admiralty/Lord High Admiral at the foremast, the Royal Standard at the mainmast, and the Union Jack at the aftermost mast.
In 1955 the Admiralty reluctantly agreed that the flag of the Admiral of the Royal Yacht Squadron, a position held by the Duke of Edinburgh, might be flown at the foremast when he was on board Britannia in certain circumstances.
HRH the Duke, being the senior male in the Royal family, is by default an admiral of the fleet, a field marshal and a marshal of the RAF.

The Royal Australian Navy conducted the event for many years, but due to changes in the Navy training structure the Hardy Cup competition had lapsed in recent years.

On account of events connected with the war in Egypt and the departure of the Duke of Connaught, the Prince of Wales was prevented from attending the meeting; and, in his absence, the chair was taken by the vice-commodore, the Marquis of Londonderry.

 Skandia Cowes Week 2007 - Royal Yacht Squadron
The start line is split into two; Black Group classes (larger yachts) start on the outer segment of the line and the White Group classes (smaller day boats) start on the inner segment just in front of the Royal Yacht Squadron.
Each class is given a warning signal from a cannon under the RYS flagstaff 10 minutes before its start, followed by another gun at 5 minutes (preparatory signal), a one minute signal (a hooter this time) and finally a gun at the start.
The race control centre is located within the battlements of the Royal Yacht Squadron where the race officers - all members of the Cowes Combined Clubs - set the courses and manage the racing.

A syndicate of 5 members of the New York Yacht Club built and sailed a schooner they called America to Britain where it entered the Royal Yacht Squadron's race which was open to all nations but in fact was only raced by America and other yachts of the Royal Yacht Squadron.
Several years later, the syndicate gifted the Cup to the New York Yacht Club as a trophy for friendly competition between yacht clubs of foreign countries and the Club then invited the eminent yacht clubs of Europe to compete.

The schooner yacht America defeated Aurora and 13 others of the Royal Yacht Squadron fleet in a race around the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England.
For their efforts the syndicate of New York Yacht Club members was awarded a bottomless pitcher ("ewer" to be more precise), 27 inches tall and crafted of 134 ounces of silver plate in 1848 by the crown jewellers, Garrard of London.
In the Royal Yacht Squadron the cup was nothing special, just an ordinary trophy on the shelf that had a familiar design and had cost 100 pounds.
