In 1897, the Royal and Ancient were given sole control of the Rules of Golf Committee, a job which they have discharged for all areas outside of USA and Mexico ever since.

Their motives were two-fold; to enjoy the sport and the conviviality which always followed, but also by staging an annual contest for a significant trophy they hoped to restore the reputation of St Andrews as the home of golf and stimulate a return to the glory days when royalty and religious leaders were regular visitors.
This extended period of change coincided with the strengthening reputation of St Andrews as the home of golf, enhanced by the granting of royal patronage by King William IV in 1834 and the building of an imposing clubhouse 20 years later.
By the end of the 19th century golf clubs throughout Britain looked naturally to St Andrews for guidance and the members of the Club somewhat reluctantly agreed to take command of the rules of the game.

This fact gave rise to the Royal Blackheath's claim to be nearly 400 years old and thus the oldest golf club in England.
The R and A was responsible for formulating the "Rules of Golf" in 1897 and in 1919, at a meeting in Edinburgh, the most prominent British clubs appointed the R and A the "supreme ruling authority for the management and control of the game".
This was the first golf club outside the British Isles and it was followed in 1842 by another course on the opposite side of India at Bombay.

 History of the Lincolnshire Union of Golf Clubs
Golf in Lincolnshire dates from the 1890’s when the first Golf Clubs played the game in Parks and on the commons but as the game grew more popular the sand dunes of the coast were soon appropriated for courses.
Thirteen of the leading Clubs in the County became affiliated to the Union and the first Championship meeting extending over a week was held on the green of the Lincoln Golf Club in April of that year.
Today their are 56 Clubs in the Union within the geographical area from the Humber in the North to the County Boundary in the South with a male playing membership of some 21,000.
