Royalex canoes, and until recently, I never had a problem.
Since the hull shortens as the Royalex shrinks, it would seem that routing a slot through the screw holes (parallel to the keel) should work even better than enlarging the holes.

The royalex did oilcan and flex a bit (nowhere near as stiff as Mad Rivers royalex layup) but it also survived a broach on a rock.
The reason I mention this is the dark olive royalex has a propensity to absorb sunlight, making the olive royalex very hot and uncomfortable in the summertime.
The hull is stiff and has a fine entry for a royalex boat and it a paddles with little effort.The boat weighs in at 61 lbs.

The royalex is deeper and the tumblehome is more pronounced.
You can't mold the same lines in Royalex that you layup in cloth, so the boats are different.
Actually, the deeper depth of the Royalex would be an advantage on the upper Missinaibi.

Royalex canoes with wooden gunwales are pretty and I believe in some respects more resilient that the same model with aluminum gunwales.
The problem is that ash and Royalex don’t have the same rate of contraction when the weather gets really cold.
