Mary Fowler, head teacher at Heaton Royds, which caters for children aged two to 11 with learning disabilities, said: "I was shocked that officer recommendations in the special school plan had been overturned at the last minute.
Heaton Royds was the only special school in the world to be chosen to take part in UNESCO's Effective Education for All project.
She said it was possible that the new school could be called Heatonfield or Green Royds so that part of the names of the old schools would be retained.

Mr Royds feels that it is not necessary to apply a threshold on radiated power in order to exclude mobile phones from registration, as the register would only apply to fixed transmitters.
Mr Royds believes that the availability of these data would lead to the development of low emission phones, in the same way as Swedish pressure had resulted in a reduction in the emissions from VDUs.

In the evening we visited Cape Royds, site of both an Adelie Penguin colony and a hut that was built by Ernest Shackleton and his crew of the Nimrod on their 1907 expedition.
They landed at Cape Royds in late January, and sent their ship back to New Zealand on February 22nd with instructions to return before March of 1908.
This is the hut at Cape Royds that was built and used by Shackleton and his men of the Nimrod expedition.

We had worked at Royds in 2001, but had only collected modern samples and excavated sites very near the modern colony, and so had not surveyed to the north.
At Cape Royds we decided to leave our visit to the historic Shackleton hut for last, and we first headed north towards Clear Lake.
Royds is a remnant of volcanic activity on Mt. Erebus, so the rock is all dark extrusive rock produced in lava flows, but the existence of very large crystals indicates some sort of two-stage cooling process.

The hut at Cape Royds, like others in the region, is in a state of serious disrepair as a result of the harsh weather and the wear and tear caused by visitors.
Implementation and funding of the restoration work has still to be agreed, but it is hoped that the UK and the US will provide the majority of the funds for the work.
The Cape Royds hut, which measures just six by seven metres, was built in London before being transported to Antarctica and erected in 1908.

EDWARD ROYDS WAS THE THIRD of the twelve children of James Royds of Falinge, Rochdale (1758-1842) and his wife Mary, daughter of Charles Smith of Summer Castle, Rochdale.
Described by her grandson Philip Gribble as a delightful and petite daughter of a branch of the Blomfield family, Cornelia died on 12 December 1919 aged 90 and was buried at Penmaenmawr.
The son of the late Canon FC Royds and Cornelia, daughter of Canon GB Blomfield of Mollington Hall, Cheshire, he was born on 6 July 1860 and educated at Haileybury.
