  Royton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Royton is situated between the industrial towns of Oldham and Rochdale, running along the A671, it is bounded by Chadderton to the south and Shaw and Crompton to the north.
Royton forms part of the Oldham West and Royton parlimentary constituency and since 1997 is represented in the House of Commons by Labour MP, Michael Meacher.
In the 2005 general election, the constituency of Oldham West and Royton was held by the Labour candidate Michael Meacher MP receiving almost 50% of all votes.

Royton is a district in the parish of Lenham southeast from the church of St. Mary [which is at the south end of Lenham] about a mile.
Royton is mentioned as early as 1259 when Simon Fitzadam was in possession of the manor at Royton.
The manor was purchased by Robert Atwater [who is not the Robert Atwood of this genealogy] early in the reign of Henry VIII, and he made it his residence and it continued in the possession of his descendants thru his daughter, Mary Honywood, until toward the end of the 1800s.

Oldham is a large town in North West England, lying in the foothills of the Pennines on the north-eastern edge of the Greater Manchester conurbation: the town proper has a population of 103,544, including a large Asian population, with Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani communities.
In addition the town is host to several league cricket teams with a number of semi-professional league clubs including Oldham CC, Royton CC and Werneth CC in the Central Lancashire League and Saddleworth CC, Austerlands CC, Uppermill CC and Greenfield CC in the Saddleworth and District League.

Royton Town Football Club started out life as the Stotts Benham works side in the Rochdale Alliance League, before changing their name to Royton Town in 1985.
Within three seasons, Royton went from the Second Division into the Premier Division of the LAL, however ground problems at their Monarch Mill home in Royton led to them demoted back to the First Division by the LAL, and saw them looking around for a new home.

ROYTON Road Runners had 25 members taking part in the Saddleworth six-mile road race, the 12th in their club championship series.
Barry Greaves was the first Royton runner to finish with a creditable time of 38 mins, 32 secs.
Bernie Goodwin was very close behind with a time of 38:53, followed by Dave Phillips (39:09), a time which was good enough for him to collect the first prize for the male veteran runners over-60.
