rsh   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Rsh connects to the specified host, and executes the specified command.
Rsh copies its standard input to the remote command, the standard out- put of the remote command to its standard output, and the standard error of the remote command to its standard error.
Thus the command rsh otherhost cat remotefile >> localfile appends the remote file remotefile to the local file localfile, while rsh otherhost cat remotefile ">>" otherremotefile appends remotefile to otherremotefile.

Using TCLSH and RSH to Ensure Full Reachability
RSH (Remote SHell) is used to execute commands on a remote device.
RSH was originally developed for use in a UNIX enviroment to ease the management of multiple machines.
RSH is extremely insecure and in turn is not commonly used anymore.

 Winsock RCP/RSH/REXEC
Winsock RSH allows you to execute a program on a remote system and view the output of that program on your screen or capture the output to a file.
However, it requires you to specify a valid password for the remote system before the command is executed.
To rsh, rexec, or rcp to a Windows system, it must be running a third party rshd and/or rexecd, such as Denicomp Systems' Winsock RSHD/95 for Windows 95/98/ME, or Winsock RSHD/NT for Windows NT/2000/XP.

For exam- ple, if you are running rsh and invoke a rsh in the background without redirecting its input away from the terminal, it will block even if no reads are posted by the remote command.
If rsh is invoked with the basename remsh, rsh will check for the existence of the file /usr/bin/remsh.
This bug occurs only when rsh is at the beginning of a pipe- line and is not reading standard input.

 man: rsh
The rsh utility copies its standard input to the remote command, the standard output of the remote command to its standard output, and the standard error of the remote command to its standard error.
For example, the command rsh otherhost cat remotefile >> localfile appends the remote file remotefile to the local file localfile, while rsh otherhost cat remotefile ">>" other_remotefile appends remotefile to other_remotefile.
If you are using csh(1) and put a rsh in the background without redirect- ing its input away from the terminal, it will block even if no reads are posted by the remote command.

This is the total time to complete both the rsh connection and the command.
This approach would seem to favor simply calling the system-installed rsh command, however this seems inevitably to lead to problems with local ports left in the TIME_WAIT state.
Given that multi-rsh can burn through large numbers of ports quickly, it is entirely possible to get all available reserved ports stuck in TIME_WAIT, making further rsh commands (and some other services) temporarily unnavailable.

You sometimes need this option to avoid unfortunate interactions between rsh and the shell which invokes it.
This is argu- ably wrong, but currently hard to fix for reasons too com- plicated to explain here.
The rsh then tries to write into the ``broken pipe'' and, instead of terminating neatly, proceeds to compete with your shell for its standard input.

How do I use "rsh" without having the rsh hang around...

Furthermore, the input/output redirections on the REMOTE machine (inside the single quotes) ensure that rsh thinks the session can be terminated (there's no data flow any more.) Note: The file that you redirect to/from on the remote machine doesn't have to be /dev/null; any ordinary file will do.

Using rsh, xboard or WinBoard can run on one machine and control a chess engine that is running on another machine.
This is particularly useful if you want to run a match between two engines, and you'd like them to run on separate machines so that they do not have to compete with each other for memory and processor time.
Unix normally comes with an rsh server, so xboard and WinBoard have always been able to control remote engines running on Unix machines, but working rsh servers for Windows are hard to find.
